Crustal evolution of Western Europe: Constraints from detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf-O isotopes

Dov Avigad et al.

Summary: The study focuses on detrital zircon from the black sand of the Rhone River delta in southern France, which provides important insights into the major episodes of European magmatism. The results show that the black sand samples represent magmatic events at 0.55 Ga (Cadomian), 0.45 Ga (Cenerian), and 0.31 Ga (Variscan). The Hf isotopes in the zircon suggest the involvement of continuous crustal reworking during European magmatic episodes. However, the oxygen isotope analysis indicates the presence of a significant sedimentary component in the genesis of European granitoids. The study concludes that the prevalent Hf-T-DM ages obtained are mixed and do not confirm the reworking of Mesoproterozoic crust in the region.

Detrital zircon similarities and dissimilarities between the Iberian Pyrite Belt, Ossa-Morena Zone and Meguma

Joao Lains Amaral et al.

Summary: By comparing the similarities and dissimilarities between the Iberian Pyrite Belt, Ossa-Morena Zone, and West Meguma Terrane using multidimensional scaling, it is found that the Devonian rocks in the Iberian Pyrite Belt have a provenance similar to the West Meguma Terrane, while the detrital rocks of the Ossa-Morena Zone and West Meguma Terrane show remarkable similarities, suggesting a similar paleogeographic setting for both terranes during the Ediacaran to Lower Ordovician times relative to the North African blocks.

Shifts in the Ediacaran to Lower Ordovician sedimentary zircon provenances of Northwest Gondwana: the Pyrenean files

Maxime Padel et al.

Summary: Detrital zircon grains from Cambrian-Lower Ordovician sediments in the Pyrenees provide insights into their provenance sources and the geodynamic evolution of the northwestern Gondwana margin. The zircon populations and age distributions suggest a gradual shift from Panafrican/Anti-Atlasian to Saharan Metacraton/Arabian Nubian Shield sources, supporting similar trends in other geological indicators. The study also highlights the importance of Cambrian deposition in the Pyrenean Basin.

Reorganization of Northern Peri-Gondwanan Terranes at Cambrian-Ordovician Times: Insights from the Detrital Zircon Record of the Ossa-Morena Zone (SW Iberian Massif)

Cristina Accotto et al.

Summary: The Ossa-Morena Zone is a Gondwana-related terrane composed mainly of Cambrian rocks. U-Pb dating of zircon grains from 15 samples revealed the absence of a significant Stenian-early Tonian population in the Cambrian Ossa-Morena rocks, in contrast to the results from middle Ordovician-Lower Devonian rocks in the same area. This suggests a change in the paleogeographic/paleotectonic evolution of the Ossa-Morena Zone during the late Ediacaran-early Ordovician period, possibly involving an eastward displacement and a reorganization of drainage systems.

U-Pb geochronology and isotopic geochemistry of adakites and related magmas in the Ediacaran arc section of the SW Iberian Massif: The role of subduction erosion cycles in peri-Gondwanan arcs

Esther Rojo-Perez et al.

Summary: In the SW region of the Iberian Massif, changes in the subduction angle, subduction rate, mantle sources, and crustal materials have a recognizable cyclicality in the peri-Gondwanan Ediacaran arc section. Through geochronology, geochemistry, and isotopic sources, these changes can be traced in the magmatic bodies. The study highlights the importance of subduction erosion mechanisms in the peri-Gondwana margin during the Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian times.

Opening and closure of Cadomian peri-Gondwanan oceans: age and evolution of the Merida Ophiolite (SW Iberia)

R. Arenas et al.

Summary: The Ossa-Morena Complex in the SW Iberian Massif contains a stack of units with different origins, including a Cadomian ophiolite, the Merida Ophiolite. The Cadomian terranes in this complex are important for reconstructing the Ediacaran margin of Gondwana in NW Africa. The Merida Ophiolite represents oceanic lithosphere of a back-arc basin and played a role in the collision between the volcanic arc and the Gondwana margin.

A complex accretionary assembly of Pangea developed in the range c. 400-340 Ma: the four successive events of high-P/ultra-high-P metamorphism of the Variscan Orogen

Irene Novo-Fernandez et al.

Summary: In the most internal zone of the Variscan Orogen, evidence of almost continuous metamorphism and accretion onto the continental margin of Gondwana for about 60 million years has been found. This includes three successive (ultra)high-P metamorphic episodes caused by subduction of peri-Gondwanan lithosphere, followed by the continental collision between Gondwana and Laurussia. The geological events involved the formation of high-P, high-T metamorphic belts, the opening and closing of Middle Devonian oceanic basins, and the accretion of ophiolites.

Revised stratigraphy in the eastern Meguma terrane, Nova Scotia, Canada, and variations in whole-rock chemical and Sm-Nd isotopic compositions of the Goldenville and Halifax groups

Sandra M. Barr et al.

Summary: Based on new geological mapping and rock analysis, the Goldenville and Halifax groups in the Meguma terrane have been divided into formations representing different stratigraphic positions. The chemical compositions of the rocks suggest deposition in an active or passive continental margin with volcanic source rocks. The data also indicate mixing of sediments derived from different crustal sources. The findings are consistent with previous studies on detrital zircon patterns.

Geochemistry and Sm-Nd isotopic sources of Late Ediacaran siliciclastic series in the Ossa-Morena Complex: Iberian-Bohemian correlations

Esther Rojo-Perez et al.

Summary: The Cadomian basement in central and southern Europe is made up of Ediacaran-Early Cambrian sequences that are fragmented along the Variscan Orogen. The southwestern Iberian Massif contains well-preserved Cadomian basement strata that show deposition in back-arc or fore-arc settings. Isotopic data suggest a common source for the Cadomian basement in southwestern Iberia and North Bohemia, located near the periphery of the West African Craton, indicating a peri-Gondwanan connection during the Ediacaran period.

Tectonic setting and isotopic sources (Sm-Nd) of the SW Iberian Autochthon (Variscan Orogen)

Jose Manuel Fuenlabrada et al.

Summary: The metasedimentary rock successions in the Sierra Albarrana Group in SW Iberia were deposited in the Early Paleozoic period under the influence of the evolution of a peri-Gondwanan active margin. Their geochemical and isotopic characteristics suggest a significant contribution of reworked materials from old continental sources, indicating the tectonic activities and sedimentary environment during the early stages of the formation.
