Evolution of the early to late Archean mantle from Hf-Nd-Ce isotope systematics in basalts and komatiites from the Pilbara Craton

E. Hasenstab et al.

Summary: Through isotope analysis of rock samples from the Pilbara Craton and Fortescue Group in Australia, researchers found that mantle-crust differentiation may have started as early as about 4.2 billion years ago, prior to any preserved stratigraphy. Additionally, isotope data suggest that the composition of the Earth is broadly chondritic.

Combined Hf and Nd isotope microanalysis of co-existing zircon and REE-rich accessory minerals: High resolution insights into crustal processes

Johannes Hammerli et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential of combining Nd and Hf isotope tracer data on a sub-mineral scale to further understand the geochemical characteristics of crustal rocks. By combining new data with previous research, it reveals one of the key advantages of combining two independent isotope systems at a micrometre scale.

The coupled Hf-Nd isotope record of the early Earth in the Pilbara Craton

R. Salerno et al.

Summary: The initial Hf and Nd isotope compositions of Earth's oldest rocks show that the granites were derived from a chondritic source without a strongly depleted mantle or enriched crustal source. The Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd isotope systems in the Pilbara samples are in full agreement, contrasting with previous records of decoupled Hf and Nd isotope compositions in Eo-Paleoarchean terranes. Integrated age-isotope approach can help assess the integrity of bulk-rock Nd isotope data through examination of Sm-Nd isotope systematics in accessory minerals.

Monazite EPMA-CHIME dating of Sangmelima granulite and granitoid rocks in the Ntem Complex, Cameroon: Implications for Archean tectono-thermal evolution of NW Congo craton

Joseph Martial Akame et al.

Summary: The study used electron microprobe (EPMA) technology and monazite age data to analyze the magmatic and tectonic events in the rocks of Sangmelima, Cameroon, refining the geological evolution of the NW Congo Craton. Through age data, it was found that the Ntem Complex experienced significant magmatic events between approximately 2950 and 2850 Ma, followed by two major tectonothermal events.

Geology and geochronology of the Archean plutonic rocks in the northeast Democratic Republic of Congo

R. E. Turnbull et al.

Summary: This study presents a regional-scale analysis of Archean plutonic rocks in the northeast Democratic Republic of Congo, including new U-Pb zircon ages and petrographic data. Felsic-intermediate magmatism in the region occurred from about 3200 to 2530 Ma, with two distinct rock series identified during the period. The presence of high field strength and rare Earth elements in the granitoids suggest unique geological processes in the area.
