Size effect at aggregate level in microCT scans and DEM simulation-Splitting tensile test of concrete

J. Suchorzewski et al.

Summary: The paper presents an experimental and numerical study on the size effect of concrete cylindrical specimens in a splitting tensile test. It was found that the strength and ductility of the concrete decrease with increasing specimen size.

Experimental and numerical investigation on size effect on crushing behaviors of single calcareous sand particles

Dumin Kuang et al.

Summary: The size effect on the crushing behaviors of single calcareous sand particles was investigated experimentally and numerically. As the particle size increases, the fragmentation mode changes, and the fractures mainly occur in the contact area between the loading walls and the top and bottom ends of the particles.

Experimental research on the strength distribution of brittle spheres under compression

Qiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the particle strength distribution of K9 glass spheres and ceramic spheres through breakage tests, finding that particle strength is positively correlated with size. A simple transformation algorithm was developed to convert crushing force distribution into breakage energy distribution. These research findings contribute to the improvement of comminution process design and optimization.

DEM investigation on the breakage of spherical aggregate under multi-contact loadings

Xiaoxing Liu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the applicability of four particle breakage criteria through DEM simulations on spherical aggregates. The results showed that the parameters evaluated cannot accurately predict particle crushing under arbitrary loading configurations, and the maximal contact force at crushing is related to the number and spatial arrangement of loading contacts. The influence of microstructural heterogeneity on breakage strength and the applicability of MCF criterion were also discussed.
