A culture-based assessment of the microbiota of conventional and free-range chicken meat from Irish processing facilities.

M. Marmion et al.

Summary: Chicken meat is popular worldwide, and free-range and ethically produced meat are becoming more popular. However, poultry is often contaminated with spoilage microbes and zoonotic pathogens, posing a health risk to consumers. This study compared the microbiota of conventional and free-range broilers from Irish processing plants, finding no significant difference in shelf-life between the two. However, the presence of pathogenesis-associated genera varied among different meat processors, highlighting the importance of processing and storage in determining the microflora of chicken products reaching consumers.

Antimicrobial resistance in the globalized food chain: a One Health perspective applied to the poultry industry

Mauro de Mesquita Souza Saraiva et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is a major global public health crisis, especially within the food animal industry where challenges to increase productivity while minimizing AMR continue to escalate. Poultry production plays a critical role in the global food supply, particularly as a source of low-cost, high-quality protein, impacting economies and public health worldwide. The globalization of the food supply, particularly within the poultry industry, is closely linked to the exchange of goods and services, as well as the movement of populations, presenting complex challenges in combating antimicrobial resistance at a global level.

Metagenomic Sequencing for Microbial DNA in Human Samples: Emerging Technological Advances

Yu Shi et al.

Summary: Whole genome metagenomic sequencing is a powerful technology that allows the identification of all genes from different organisms in a complex sample. However, the presence of excessive host DNA poses a challenge in metagenomic studies, and various methods have been developed to remove host DNA and improve microbial detection sensitivity.

Pilot Study on Poultry Meat from Antibiotic Free and Conventional Farms: Can Metagenomics Detect Any Difference?

Alessandra De Cesare et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether raising chickens without antibiotics would affect the microbiome of poultry meat. The results showed that antibiotic-free farming resulted in significantly lower antimicrobial resistance load in the meat, although this difference was lost on the carcasses.

Antibiotic resistance genes load in an antibiotic free organic broiler farm

Barbara Salerno et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a broiler farm that has never used antibiotics and found that not using antibiotics does not fully reduce the load of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in meat processing environments. In addition, other sources of ARGs, including the production phase and breeding stage, should be considered.

Metatranscriptomic Analysis of the Chicken Gut Resistome Response to In-Feed Antibiotics and Natural Feed Additives

Raju Koorakula et al.

Summary: The emergence of resistance against common antibiotics in the gut microbiota is a major issue. Phytogenic feed additives (PFAs) have the potential to improve animal health by positively affecting the gut microbial ecosystem. This study found that PFAs can decrease the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes and could be an alternative to antibiotics in poultry farming.

Metagenomics-Based Approach to Source-Attribution of Antimicrobial Resistance Determinants - Identification of Reservoir Resistome Signatures

Ana Sofia Ribeiro Duarte et al.

Summary: Metagenomics can reveal the genetic content of microbiota in different environments, with great potential for investigating the transmission of foodborne hazards. This study demonstrates the application of metagenomics in attributing antimicrobial resistance sources, showing a potential relationship between fecal resistome components and specific reservoirs.

Summary: Environmental selection of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock is primarily influenced by metal residues, with metals having a greater impact on ARG profile compared to antibiotics. Bacterial composition and horizontal gene transfer are key factors shaping the composition of ARGs.

Antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella from poultry meat in Brazil: results of a nationwide survey

Renata Batista Rau et al.

Summary: A nationwide survey in Brazil investigated Salmonella isolates from poultry meat in 2014 and 2017, showing high and increasing rates of resistance among isolates to multiple antibiotics, particularly nalidixic acid, ampicillin, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline. The main serotypes expressing resistance were Salmonella ser. Heidelberg and Salmonella ser. Minnesota, emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in the poultry chain.
