The Effect of Breed and Age on the Growth Performance, Carcass Traits and Metabolic Profile in Breast Muscle of Chinese Indigenous Chickens

Shaolin Deng et al.

Summary: This study examined the growth performance, carcass characteristics, and muscle metabolites of crossbred broiler and two indigenous, yellow-feathered chickens in China. The crossbred broiler showed better feed efficiency and muscle yield, as well as lower abdominal fat percentage compared to the indigenous chickens. Metabolomics analysis revealed differences in sugars, amino acids, and organic acids among the three chicken breeds. The study also found significant differences in growth performance and carcass traits of yellow-feathered chickens with the extension of the feeding period. Furthermore, different metabolites reflected altered metabolic pathways affected by age in yellow-feathered chickens. Overall, this study provides important insights into the production efficiency and chemical composition of precursor flavor in indigenous, yellow-feathered chickens in China.

Dominant changes in the breast muscle lipid profiles of broiler chickens with wooden breast syndrome revealed by lipidomics analyses

Ranran Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals significant alterations in the lipid profile of affected breast muscles, characterized by increased neutral lipids and decreased phospholipids. Minor changes in lipid profiles were found in the liver and serum of the affected groups. Comprehensive analysis of body lipid metabolism suggests that the abnormal lipid profile of wooden breast may be independent of liver metabolism.

Enhanced cytokine expression and upregulation of inflammatory signaling pathways in broiler chickens affected by wooden breast myopathy

Tong Xing et al.

Summary: The study revealed that WB myopathic broilers exhibited enhanced muscle damage and inflammation response, characterized by histopathological changes, increased plasma creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activities, elevated myeloperoxidase activity, and overproduction of nitric oxide. These findings suggested an immune disorder and systemic inflammation response.

Summary: The study suggests that current subsidy policies in China for the hog industry may not be the most efficient way to reduce pork prices. Instead, shifting some subsidies to the chicken farming industry could potentially lower pork prices faster and at a lower cost, benefiting consumers, producers, and the government.

Broilers production challenges in the tropics: A review

Cocou Claude Kpomasse et al.

Summary: Broiler production under tropical climate faces challenges such as scarcity of feed and veterinary services, harsh environmental conditions, and the impact of climate change. High ambient temperature leads to decreased feed intake, disrupted metabolism, and increased fat deposition and oxidative stress in birds.

Hepatic Oxidative Stress, Apoptosis, and Inflammation in Broiler Chickens With Wooden Breast Myopathy

Tong Xing et al.

Summary: Wooden breast syndrome in broiler chickens not only affects the pectoralis major muscle but also leads to liver injury, as evidenced by higher plasma enzymes and histopathological changes in the liver. This myopathy induces oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and hepatic apoptosis, along with inflammatory responses in the liver. Additional assessment is needed to understand the systemic physiological disparities and metabolic changes associated with wooden breast myopathy.

Techniques for in vivo assessment of myopathies in broiler chicken breasts using a biopsy as a support tool

Vivian Aparecida Rios de Castilho et al.

Summary: This experiment validated non-invasive evaluation techniques for assessing myopathies in broilers such as wooden breast and white striping, using biopsy as a support tool. The study found that there was no sex influence on the occurrence of myopathies, and that muscle surface temperature generally decreased with age, with muscles having less fiber area showing lower temperatures. Ultrasonography and infrared thermography were identified as potential methods for detecting muscle changes associated with myopathic lesions.

A critical review of the mechanisms involved in the occurrence of growth-related abnormalities affecting broiler chicken breast muscles

F. Soglia et al.

Summary: The poultry industry has been facing growth-related muscular abnormalities over the past decade with unique phenotypes and common histological features named White Striping, Wooden Breast, and Spaghetti Meat. The review paper critically surveys the outcomes of histologic and ultrastructural observations and suggests that sarcoplasmic reticulum stress and hypoxic conditions may be responsible for the onset and progression of these growth-related myopathies affecting broilers Pectoralis major muscles.

Blood Plasma Biomarkers for Woody Breast Disease in Commercial Broilers

Byungwhi Kong et al.

Summary: The study on Woody Breast Myopathy aims to improve prediction or early diagnosis by using body fluids like blood as potential biomarkers. Specific plasma proteins and metabolites such as FRA10A associated CGG repeat 1, MYH9, 3-hydroxybutyric acid, and raffinose are found to be differentially abundant in WB broilers, indicating their potential as early-age biomarkers for WB onset.
