Characterization of clutch traits and egg production in six chicken breeds

Lei Shi et al.

Summary: Understanding the laying pattern of birds is crucial for developing proper breeding schemes and management practices. A study comparing six chicken breeds found significant differences in clutch traits and egg production. The breeds with higher egg production had longer clutch lengths, while the less productive indigenous breed had shorter clutch lengths. Clutch length is a proper selection criterion for improving egg production, while age at first egg is an important trait to focus on for the indigenous breed.

Research Note: Heterosis for egg production and oviposition pattern in reciprocal crossbreeds of indigenous and elite laying chickens

Yuanmei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors contributing to egg production heterosis and found that crossbreeds had higher egg numbers and earlier age at first egg, but negative heterosis for clutch traits and oviposition interval.

Nest acceptance, clutch, and oviposition traits are promising selection criteria to improve egg production in cage-free system

Summary: The study investigated the genetic traits related to nesting behavior in Rhode Island Red and White Leghorn hens, finding that clutch number and oviposition traits are promising criteria for improving egg production, while nest acceptance for laying can help reduce off-nest egg laying.
