Studies on properties of coated para-aramid fabric samples developed for military applications - post UVA-340 exposure

R. G. Revaiah et al.

Summary: In this article, the authors studied coated technical fabrics for military and space exploration applications, specifically focusing on finding suitable barrier chemicals for military inflatable devices used in high altitude regions with intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They prepared 12 varieties of coated fabrics using para-aramid as the base fabric and four different barrier chemicals for coating. The aim was to find a low weight, high performance fabric that offers air/water proofness, UV protection, and abrasion resistance, as para-aramid loses its mechanical properties under UV radiation.

A review of carbon fiber surface modification methods for tailor-made bond behavior with cementitious matrices

Huanyu Li et al.

Summary: Insufficient bonding between hydrophobic carbon fibers and water-based suspensions has limited the application of carbon fiber reinforced cements and other mineral building materials. Researchers have explored physical and chemical modification methods to enhance load transfer from mineral matrices to carbon fibers. Polymer impregnations and temperature-stable mineral suspensions have been used to improve the interface between carbon fibers and matrices, achieving better pullout behavior. Surface modification techniques such as oxidation and electrophoretic deposition have also been employed to improve fiber-matrix interactions. This article systematically reviews and compares these approaches, providing recommendations for achieving tailor-made interfacial bonding behavior.

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of bolted CFRC plates: Combined nonlinear effects

Xiaofeng Liu et al.

Summary: Based on the material nonlinearity of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRC) obtained in previous work, this paper further studies the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of bolt-connected CFRC plates. A joint parameter identification method is proposed to accurately identify the nonlinear mechanical parameters of the joint interface. A combined nonlinear parameter tracking model is developed to capture CFRC-material and joint nonlinearity. The analysis of a bolt-connected CFRC plate demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed models in tracking parameters and simulating the mechanical behavior of the joint.

Effect of SiO2 nano-interphase on the water absorption mechanism of natural fiber reinforced composites: A multi-scale study

Xuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study designs a SiO2 nano-interphase between jute fibers and polypropylene to prevent interface failure caused by water absorption. Through molecular dynamic simulation, microstructure characterization, and macroscopic water absorption test, the underlying mechanism of water absorption for Jute-SiO2/PP composites at different scales is elaborated. The results show that the SiO2/PP interface and the jute-SiO2 interface effectively protect the composites from water diffusion, leading to enhanced water resistance and dimensional stability.
