Combustion and mechanical properties of natural rubber based on carboxyl modified carbon nanotubes and intumescent flame retardant

Xiaoguang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated flame retardant natural rubber composites using carboxyl modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes and traditional intumescent flame retardant, showing improved flame retardancy, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. The addition of CMCNTs and intumescent flame retardant led to reduced heat and smoke production rates, as well as enhanced elongation at break of the composites.

Flammability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer/polypropylene composites filled with intumescent flame retardant and inorganic synergists

Can Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that in EPDM/PP/IFR composites, the synergistic effect of ZB and EG with IFR is better than OMMT. The addition of inorganic particles improves the thermal stability of the composites and forms dense char layers. Additionally, composites with inorganic particles exhibit more rubber-filler interaction, restricting the movement of rubber chains.

A Durable, Flexible, Large-Area, Flame-Retardant, Early Fire Warning Sensor with Built-In Patterned Electrodes

Fawad Khan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the fabrication of a durable, flexible, and large-scale early fire-warning sensor through constructing a hierarchical flame retardant nanocoating on cotton fabric. The sensor shows a short alarming time in response to external high temperature, heat, or fire, and possesses high washability, flexibility, resistance to abrasion and wear. The hierarchical nanocoating can self-extinguish, enabling the sensor to continue warning during fire, thus offering an inventive concept for developing a universal and large-scale very early fire-monitoring platform.

A Hydrophobic Sisal Cellulose Microcrystal Film for Fire Alarm Sensors

Zuocai Zhang et al.

Summary: A simple and green approach has been reported for the development of a hydrophobic, flame-retardant composite film using soy protein isolate, sisal cellulose microcrystals, graphene nanosheets, and citric acid with synergetic benefit. Compared to other composite films, the newly developed film shows significantly improved water resistance and can maintain excellent physical structure and good electrical conductivity in an ethanol flame. This work paves the way for novel fire-retardant fire alarm biosensors.

Microstructure design of polypropylene/expandable graphite flame retardant composites toughened by the polyolefin elastomer for enhancing its mechanical properties

Ruilong Li et al.

Summary: The incorporation of POE significantly improved the toughness and impact strength of PP composites, as well as enhancing the flame retardancy. SEM images showed that POE droplets were finely dispersed in the PP matrix, exhibiting a typical two-phase structure. Rheological behaviors indicated improved elasticity and longer relaxation times, with the formation of an interparticle network in the composites.
