Simultaneously tuning interfacial and interlaminar properties of glass fiber fabric/epoxy laminated composites via modifying fibers with graphene oxide

Jinlong Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) with different oxidation degrees was synthesized and grafted onto the surface of glass fiber fabric (GFf) for the fabrication of GFf/epoxy laminated composites. The interlaminar and interfacial properties as well as interlaminar microstructure of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the dispersion state and strengthening/toughening efficiency of GO in the composites were influenced by the various oxygen-containing functional groups on the GO surface due to oxidation degrees, thus affecting the composites' interlaminar and interfacial adhesion. The optimal oxidation degree of GO was achieved by using a moderate weight ratio of oxidation agent (KMnO4)/graphite (2:1), which improved the interlaminar shear strength, work of fracture, storage moduli, fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion, and glass-transition temperature of the composites.

Carbon nanotube characteristics and enhancement effects on the mechanical features of polymer-based materials and structures-A review

Alamry Ali et al.

Summary: Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs) are widely used in the fabrication of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites due to their exceptional properties, such as low thermal expansion coefficient (CTE), high mechanical strength, high specific surface area (SSA), and high thermal conductivity. This review discusses the recent advancements in the incorporation of CNTs into FRPs, including functionalization techniques and various fabrication routes. It also covers common characterization techniques, as well as complex techniques, to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of CNTs incorporated FRP composites. This review provides guidance for researchers in choosing appropriate functionalization methods, fabrication routes, and characterization techniques for desired applications.

Fabrication of high-performance thermally conductive phase change material composites with porous ceramic filler network for efficient thermal management

Wondu Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel erythritol-grafted bisphenol A (ETBPA) phase change material (PCM) was fabricated through esterification, and a porous ceramic filler network consisting of carbonized cellulose nanofiber (CNF) was prepared. The PCM composites (ETBPA/BNCNF/BN and ETBPA/AlNCNF/AlN) with enhanced thermal conductivity, tensile strength, and latent heat were fabricated using different methods. The results indicate that the fabricated PCM composites have the potential to contribute to the research on thermal management systems.

Experimental investigation and optimization of compression moulding parameters for MWCNT/glass/kevlar/epoxy composites on mechanical and tribological properties

Hanumantharaya Rangaswamy et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of different proportions of multi-wall carbon nanotubes fillers on the mechanical properties of hybrid composites. It was found that compression pressure had the greatest impact on the strength of the composites, followed by mold temperature and pressure duration.

Impact Response and Damage Tolerance of Hybrid Glass/Kevlar-Fibre Epoxy Structural Composites

Vasudevan Alagumalai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of hybridisation on Kevlar/E-Glass based epoxy composite laminate structures. Composite laminates with different fibre orientations were tested for tensile strength, flexural strength, impact resistance, and energy absorption. Results showed that composites with Kevlar fibres oriented at 45 degrees exhibited superior mechanical properties compared to those with 0 and 60 degrees orientations.
