Mechanical Properties and Characterization of Polylactic Acid/Carbon Fiber Composite Fabricated by Fused Deposition Modeling

K. Ravi Kumar et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanical properties of polylactic acid/carbon fiber composites were investigated by reinforcing carbon fiber in polylactic acid composites using fused deposition modeling. The mechanical properties were analyzed by varying layer thickness, raster angle, infill density, and printing speed. Impact strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength tests were carried out to examine the mechanical properties of the composites. Mathematical models were developed to estimate the impact strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength of the PLA/carbon composites. The fracture mechanism of the composite specimens was influenced by voids, cracks, infill gaps, and interfaces.

Carlos Belei et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the Fused-Filament Fabrication (FFF) of short-fiber-reinforced polyamides by optimizing process parameters. Two approaches, traditional design of experiments (DoE) and machine learning (ML), were used. ML-based model predicted responses with higher accuracy, while DoE performed slightly better in predicting higher response values. The study also identified influential parameters and their correlation with the mechanical performance of the printed parts.
