Research progress on the correlation between properties of nanoparticles and their dispersion states in polymer matrix

Summary: This paper reviews the factors affecting the dispersion of nanoparticles in polymer matrices and describes key measures to promote nanoparticle dispersion. Successful preparation of PNCs requires nanoparticles with size smaller than the rotation radius of polymer chains and highly compatible or interacting surface with the matrix. Further studies on both thermodynamics and kinetics of the dispersion process are needed.

Summary: PBAT-based nanocomposite films with ultra-high oxygen barrier were prepared by exfoliating Na-montmorillonite in a sulfonated PBAT copolyester matrix. The films showed highly oriented MMT at certain MMT volume percentage and network-like MMT morphology at higher MMT loadings. The nanocomposite film with 32 vol% MMT exhibited significantly improved oxygen barrier compared to PBAT.
