Long Chain Polyamides: Influence of Methylene Sequence Length and External Forces on Structural Features

Rene Sattler et al.

Summary: Crystallographic studies were conducted on a series of even-even polyamides PA10.n with different methylene sequence lengths (n - 2). The results showed that the preferred polymorph after slow cooling to room temperature was a triclinic alpha phase. The higher temperature phase gamma was observed in PA10.12 and PA10.14 between the Brill transition temperature T-B and melting point T-M, while a distinct Brill transition was absent in the higher members. The influence of temperature on the packing state of the stems during cooling was discussed, and the presence of external forces on the crystalline state achieved under ambient conditions was analyzed.

Natural Polyphenol-Inspired Polymer towards Multifunction and High Performance

Guan-Qi Zheng et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a synthetic polymer called PIP (polyphenol-inspired polymer) with easy bulk preparation process, inspired by the multiple functions of natural poly-phenols. PIP exhibited tunable performances, such as excellent ultraviolet shielding performance and mechanical strength at low polyphenol content, and high fire safety at high polyphenol content. Additionally, PIP can be easily processed into films and fibers, enabling its wide potential application fields.

Summary: With increasing attention to environmental safety and health, long-chain biologically-based polyamides (PA) are considered to be promising materials owing to their biocompatibility and combining the dual advantages of polyolefins and short-chain petroleum-based polyamides. However, poor flame retardancy severely impedes long-chain biologically-based polyamides' application in versatile high-standard fields.

Furfural-based P/N/S flame retardant towards high-performance epoxy resins with flame retardancy, toughness, low dielectric properties and UV resistance

Yadong Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a bio-based phosphorus/nitrogen/sulfur (P/N/S) containing flame retardant (FDI) was prepared and applied to improve the flame retardant, dielectric, and UV-resistant properties of EP. The combination of phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur in FDI contributed to the superior flame retardancy of EP/FDI composites. These composites achieved UL-94 V-0 flammability rating with only 5 wt% FDI and showed reductions in total smoke production and peak heat release rate. Additionally, the composites exhibited excellent UV resistance, low dielectric properties, and high glass transition temperature.

Summary: The crystallization kinetics and behavior of solvent-precipitated nylon 66 (SP PA66) were studied using DSC, POM, and XRD. The Avrami equation and modified Avrami equations were used to describe the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization of SP PA66. The results showed that SP PA66 had higher crystallization rate constant, crystal perfection, and different crystal morphology and size compared to neat PA66.

Thermally induced end-group-capturing as an eco-friendly and general method for enhancing the fire safety of semi-aromatic polyesters

Bo-Wen Liu et al.

Summary: Despite the excellent overall performance, the application of polyesters is severely restricted by their inherently high flammability. In this study, an eco-friendly and general fire-safety method for semi-aromatic polyesters was developed by chemically incorporating a functional monomer into a series of semi-aromatic polyesters with similar structures. The fire safety of the copolyesters was efficiently improved, but gradually declined with the increase of the methylene group numbers in their molecular chains, attributed to the increasing cyclization tendency.

The Brill Transition in Long-Chain Aliphatic Polyamide 1012: The Role of Hydrogen-Bonding Organization

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of hydrogen-bond organization on the Brill transition of long-chain polyamide 1012 was investigated, showing a significant linear decrease in T-B values of T270 samples with decreasing CPI, while T-B values of T210 samples remained constant. Quenched samples by liquid nitrogen were found to be in the gamma-phase at ambient temperature, and the T-B gap between T210 and T270 samples was attributed to the content of randomly distributed H-bonds.
