A general approach to calculate the stiffness tensor of short-fiber composites using the fabric tensor determined by X-ray computed tomography

Fabio De Pascalis et al.

Summary: A general method of predicting the stiffness tensor of short-fiber composites has been presented in this study, based on the fabric tensor obtained from X-ray computed tomography. The method does not rely on the specific type of fabric tensor used to characterize the symmetry properties of the composite. Experimental data from thermoplastic composite matrices reinforced with short carbon and basalt fibers were used to validate the method. The statistical alignment of fibers in each portion of the sample was measured to calculate the components of the stiffness tensor.

Mechanical properties of a novel UHPC reinforced with macro basalt fibers

Zhiyuan Chen et al.

Summary: Adding macro basalt fibers (MBF) in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) improves its mechanical properties, but reduces flowability. The study found that increasing MBF content enhanced the toughness, compressive strength, and flexural strength of UHPC, with a relatively uniform fiber distribution observed at lower MBF content. Twisted MBF showed better bonding with UHPC and was more effective in enhancing mechanical properties compared to straight MBF. The quadratic model and modified model based on the Composited Theory accurately predicted the flexural post-cracking strength of UHPC with different MBF contents and geometric characteristics (R2 > 0.95).

Effect of different sizing agent-treated basalt fibers on bending and cracking performance of reinforced BFRC beams

Shengai Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bending performance of basalt fiber reinforced concrete (BFRC) beams with different sizing agents through a four-point bending test. The results show that the type of sizing agent plays a crucial role in determining the bonding properties between basalt fiber (BF) and cement matrix, and thus affects the bending performance of BFRC beams. Based on the cracking performance and ultimate load, the order of bending performance from strongest to weakest is: dispersed basalt fibers (DBF) > flexible basalt fibers (FBF) > cluster basalt fibers (CBF) > alkali resistant fibers (ARF).
