New insights into the damage assessment and energy dissipation weight mechanisms of ceramic/fiber laminated composites under ballistic impact

Yuanyuan Ma et al.

Summary: Ceramics/composite laminated armor structures have been widely used in bulletproof materials design for their synergistic energy matching. However, limited experimental testing due to heavy workload and high costs poses challenges. In this study, B4C ceramics/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite targets were studied using finite element analysis to predict the impact of ceramic splicing size, impact position, and size on anti-elastic performance. The results showed that square splicing and large size ceramics/fiber composites exhibited the best anti-elastic properties when impacted at the center position.

Influence of metal/composite interface on the damage behavior and energy absorption mechanisms of FMLs against projectile impact

Sanan H. Khan et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the interface failure in metal/GFRP laminates under high-velocity impact. Experimental findings are used to establish a finite element model that accurately predicts the damage resistance within the laminates. The results show that while the 8-layer GFRP laminate performs well at lower impact energies, laminates with metal layers provide better damage resistance through delamination, shear failure, and metal plasticity.

Role of super-elastic shape memory alloy (SE-SMA) embedment designs on energy absorption in GFRP composites

Vagish D. Mishra et al.

Summary: In this paper, the energy absorption characteristics of a super-elastic shape memory alloy in a flexible glass/epoxy composite were experimentally investigated. The study found that the relatively higher SMA deformation and restricted pull-out had a positive impact on energy absorption.

Influence of veil interleave distribution on the delamination resistance of cross-ply CFRP laminates under low velocity impact

Amit Ramji et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that using veil interleaving in CFRP laminates can reduce and shift damage location, impacting stiffness, with differences observed after the Delamination Threshold Load (DTL). This method also achieves a smoothing effect in impact force history and provides important insights into damage characteristics.

An investigation on the perforation resistance of laminated CFRP beam and square plate

Ke Yuan et al.

Summary: This study examined the mechanical behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials subjected to local loads through experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed that materials in beam shape exhibited higher perforation resistance and more diverse damage patterns compared to square-shaped specimens. The findings were further validated through numerical simulations considering strain-rate effects.

Compression after high-velocity impact behavior of pseudo-elastic shape memory alloy embedded glass/epoxy composite laminates

Luv Verma et al.

Summary: The CAI behavior of PE-SMA embedded glass/epoxy composite laminates manufactured via VARI technique was investigated experimentally after high-velocity impact. Results showed that anchored PE-SMA composites had a higher ballistic limit compared to homogeneous glass/epoxy composites, and the damage tolerance of PE-SMA based composites was better at 70 m/s but lower at higher velocities compared to homogeneous ones.
