A review on the free radical grafting of vinyl monomers onto polyethylene and polypropylene by reactive extrusion

Tian-Tian Li et al.

Summary: Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are widely used in various industries due to their balanced mechanical properties, processability, and cost-effectiveness. However, their non-polar and chemically inert nature can sometimes limit their applications. To overcome this, polar and/or functional groups can be grafted onto their backbones using free radical chemistry and reactive extrusion process, which is continuous, solventless, and has a short residence time.

Group 12 and 13 metal-alkenyl promoted generation of long-chain branching in metallocene-based polyethylene

Orlando Santoro et al.

Summary: This study achieves efficient generation of long-chain branches in linear polyethylenes using discrete B-, Al-, and Zn-alkenyl co-reagents in combination with polymerization catalysis. Rheological studies and NMR spectroscopy confirm that Al- and Zn-based reagents promote long-chain branching through a two-step mechanism, while B-alkenyl species form hydrolytically stable cross-linked structures.

Irradiation processing of immisciblePP/EOCblend: Morphology control and processability modification

Fatemeh Hassan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the preparation of injectable polypropylene/ethylene-octene copolymer blends using electron beam irradiation method at a low irradiation dose. The irradiation process changed the melt flow index of the blend suitable for injection molding, while preserving its fine morphology. Irradiation also thermally stabilized the blend morphology and reduced the interfacial tension between blend phases.

Rheological Behavior of Blends of Metallocene Catalyzed Long-Chain Branched Polyethylenes. Part I: Shear Rheological and Thermorheological Behavior

Chuangbi Chen et al.

Summary: Blends of long-chain branched metallocene-catalyzed high-density polyethylenes (LCB-mHDPE) with varying concentrations of high and low molecular LCB-mHDPE were studied for their rheological behavior, revealing differences in molar mass and distribution. The high molecular LCB-mHDPE in the blends exhibited more pronounced long-chain branching behavior compared to the base materials, with thermorheological analysis indicating increased activation energies corresponding to peak functions. This suggests that details of thermorheological complexity can be used to estimate molar mass distribution in polyethylenes.

In Situ Promotion of Long-Chain Branching in Polyethylene from Ziegler-Natta Catalysts

Xiuming Liu et al.

Summary: This paper introduced a in situ method for incorporating LCB structure into PE synthesized by Ziegler-Natta catalysts. By controlling the concentration of the bifunctional reagent during copolymerization, gel-free LCB-PEs with controlled amounts of LCB structure were successfully synthesized, showing improved extensional flow properties. Moreover, LCB-PEs demonstrated increased crystallization rates and crystallinities when compared to linear plain PE.

Rheological and foaming behaviors of long-chain branched polyamide 6 with controlled branch length

Menglong Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of long-chain branched polyamide 6 samples (LCB PA6s) with well-defined branch length were successfully fabricated via reactive extrusion using various linear PA6s as reactive materials. The GPC-rheology method was used to demonstrate the existence of LCB topological structure and quantitatively determine the relative branch length for three LCB PA6s. Rheological characterization showed that increasing branch length resulted in enhanced elastic response and melt strength of PA6s. Additionally, the melt foamability of these LCB PA6s was verified through batch foaming experiments with supercritical CO2 as the blowing agent, showing potential for large-scale production via continuous extrusion foaming process.
