Preparation and characterization of electrospun magnetic poly(ether urethane) nanocomposite mats: Relationships between the viscosity of the polymer solutions and the electrospinning ability

Luiza Madalina Gradinaru et al.

Summary: The aim of this research is to obtain electrospun fibers from poly(ether urethane) (PEU) and poly(ether urethane)-iron oxide nanoparticles (PUC) by studying the correlation between rheological characteristics and electrospinnability of polymer suspensions. The study explores the suitable polymer concentration for electrospinning based on rheological data, controlling the formation of fibers and avoiding defects. Increasing polymer concentration changes the morphology from droplets to a mixture of droplets and nanofibers, eventually leading to uniform, defect-free fibers. The influence of iron oxide nanoparticles on the rheological behavior of nanocomposites is also investigated, with the diameter of PUC fibers decreasing with increased nanoparticle content. Additionally, the electrospun nanocomposite mats exhibit superparamagnetic properties with low coercivity and remanence, making them suitable for applications requiring high surface area-to-volume or length-to-diameter ratios.
