Molecular Origin of the Reinforcement Effect and Its Strain-Rate Dependence in Polymer Nanocomposite Glass

Rui Shi et al.

Summary: We investigate the molecular origin of mechanical reinforcement in a polymer nanocomposite (PNC) under a glass state via molecular dynamics simulations. The strength of the PNC system is mainly reinforced by reducing plastic deformations of the nanoparticle neighborhood. This reinforcement effect decays with increasing strain rate, and the amplitude depends on the difference between the energy barrier for activation of the nanoparticle neighborhood and the work done by applied stress.

Mechanical properties of glassy polymer nanocomposites via atomistic and continuum models: The role of interphases

Hilal Reda et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of glassy polymer nanocomposites are investigated using a combination of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and homogenization approaches. The effective deformation gradients and mechanical properties of the polymer/nanoparticle interfaces are calculated, and a continuum model is developed to predict the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, which agree well with the results from atomistic simulations.

Gradient of mechanical properties in polymer nanocomposites: From atomistic scale to the strain gradient effective continuum

Hilal Reda et al.

Summary: It is important to accurately consider the polymer/NP interphase, which exhibits distinct mechanical properties, in glassy polymer nanocomposites (PNC). This study formulates a higher-gradient elasticity constitutive law for the interphase region using data from atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the interphase should be described as a strain gradient material, while the bulk material may still behave as a Cauchy material. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of PNCs and can guide the design of new materials with enhanced properties.

Summary: This article proposes a methodology for calculating the distribution of mechanical properties in atomistic polymer-based nanostructured systems. It introduces a new approach to probe the mechanical properties by directly computing stress and strain at the atomic level and averaging over user-defined subdomains. The method focuses on the polymer/solid interfaces and provides insights into the mechanical behavior of different regions within the composite material.

Production and investigation of mechanical properties of graphene/polystyrene nano composites

Yasir Raza et al.

Summary: The study focused on analyzing and optimizing the tensile properties of graphene-polystyrene nanocomposites, demonstrating that the incorporation of graphene in the polystyrene matrix significantly improves its mechanical properties. The concentration of graphene was identified as a critical parameter, with the optimized combination being 0.60 wt.% graphene, 10 minutes of sonication time post-mixing, and a sonication temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. The results showed a maximum increase of 97.36% in ultimate tensile strength, 82.70% in elongation, and 174.08% in elastic modulus compared to pristine polystyrene.

Summary: This study predicts the effective mechanical reinforcement of polymeric nanocomposites using a generalized three-phase-series-parallel model considering percolation and the interfacial glassy region. The research demonstrates that the nanometer range glassy interphase between filler and matrix should be considered in interpreting enhanced mechanical properties. Experimental results fitted with theoretical predictions show good agreement, suggesting potential for creating new materials with fundamental technological applications.
