Assessing Population Structure and Genetic Diversity in US Suffolk Sheep to Define a Framework for Genomic Selection

Carrie S. Wilson et al.

Summary: The genetic diversity of Suffolk sheep in the United States was evaluated using pedigree and molecular data, and the results showed an inbreeding level of 5.5%, with 10 animals contributing to a significant portion of the gene pool. A framework for establishing a genomic reference population in US Suffolk sheep was proposed based on these measures of genetic diversity.

Review: Precision livestock farming, automats and new technologies: possible applications in extensive dairy sheep farming

M. Odintsov Vaintrub et al.

Summary: Precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies are increasingly common in modern agriculture, particularly in concentrated farming operations and pasture-based systems. The Mediterranean extensive sheep farming sector is particularly interested in developing technologies for grazing animals. While developed countries have highly specialized production systems, extensive systems are still practiced due to lower input costs and market resilience. Adoption of new technologies in extensive farming may face financial barriers, but future trends such as global sheep milk economics and European agricultural policies may promote wider adoption of PLF systems in the near future.

Evolution of the sheep industry and genetic research in the United States: opportunities for convergence in the twenty-first century

J. W. Thorne et al.

Summary: The development and application of technology play a crucial role in advancing sheep production in the United States, helping the industry expand to new markets and improve production efficiency and profitability. As the sheep industry evolves, there is a shift towards small-scale operations and a rise in the popularity of hair breeds that do not require shearing. Genetic resources and new technological approaches are available to address long-standing issues such as growth, reproduction, and parasite resistance, providing opportunities for further improvements in production efficiency.

Livestock Mobility Through Integrated Beef Production-Scapes Supports Rangeland Livestock Production and Conservation

Sheila Barry

Summary: Many of the world's rangelands contribute to food production through extensive grazing systems, but loss of mobility poses a substantial risk to rangeland livestock production and conservation. In California, the beef cattle production system integrates extensive grazing systems with intensive production systems, and most ranchers participate in this integrated system.
