Leaf-cutting ants' critical and voluntary thermal limits show complex responses to size, heating rates, hydration level, and humidity

Summary: Thermal variation has different effects on Voluntary Thermal Maxima (VTmax) and Critical Thermal Maxima (CTmax) in leaf-cutting ants, with body size and relative humidity influencing VTmax and CTmax differently. However, hydration level, start temperature, and heating rate showed similar impacts on both VTmax and CTmax. The VTmax of average-sized workers was closer to their CTmax than the VTmax of smaller and bigger sister ants, indicating different thermal responses based on body condition.
