Effects of lower limb exoskeleton gait orthosis compared to mechanical gait orthosis on rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury: A systematic review and future perspectives

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the walking efficiency of lower limb exoskeleton gait orthosis and mechanical gait orthosis in patients with spinal cord injury. The results showed that both types of orthosis had positive effects on improving gait outcomes in patients. However, due to the diversity of study designs and methodologies, meta-analysis was not possible, and more high-quality studies are needed to confirm the findings.

Wearing the exoskeleton can prolong task completion time for task B and reduce perceived effort for tasks A and C, improving overall comfort.

Design and ergonomic assessment of a passive head/neck supporting exoskeleton for overhead work use

Summary: This study proposed and evaluated a passive head/neck supporting exoskeleton (HNSE) as a potential ergonomic intervention for overhead work applications. The use of HNSE significantly alleviated discomfort in the neck and shoulders and reduced muscle activity in specific muscles. However, it also caused an increase in muscle activity in other muscles. The effects of HNSE on performance and generalizability of results require further investigation.

An Occupational Shoulder Exoskeleton Reduces Muscle Activity and Fatigue During Overhead Work

Summary: This paper assesses the effect of a passive shoulder exoskeleton prototype, Exo4Work, on muscle activity, muscle fatigue, and subjective experience during simulated occupational overhead and non-overhead work. The results show that the exoskeleton can reduce muscle activity and delay the onset of muscle fatigue during overhead work. However, its assistive effect is less prominent during dynamic tasks, and wearing the exoskeleton may cause discomfort and frustration.

Effects of industrial back-support exoskeletons on body loading and user experience: an updated systematic review

Summary: This study presents an updated systematic review of recent studies on industrial back-support exoskeletons, revealing their efficiency in reducing back-load and pointing out the need for further research in real work situations. The results indicate improvements in user endurance during lifting and static bending tasks, but a decline in performance during tasks requiring increased agility. Some side effects, such as increased abdominal/lower-limb muscle activity and changes in joint angles, were observed. Future field studies involving industrial workers are recommended to provide more comprehensive insights.
