Foodborne illness caused by muscarine-containing mushrooms and identification of mushroom remnants using phylogenetics and LC-MS/MS

Summary: The 9-year analysis of wild mushroom consumption in Thailand from 2010 to 2018 identified 61 patients from 14 cases showing mushroom poisoning, mainly from foraged mushrooms in the family Inocybaceae. Multi-locus sequence data revealed that the 26 clinical samples of mushrooms belonged to Inocybe, Inosperma and Pseudosperma, with LC-MS/MS detection confirming the presence of muscarine alkaloids in Inosperma and Pseudosperma. Ingestion of muscarine-containing mushrooms resulted in muscarinic symptoms, while Inocybe consumption led to gastrointestinal irritant effects.
