Near-surface western boundary circulation off Northeast Brazil

Alina N. Dossa et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the meridional evolution of the near-surface western boundary circulation in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, specifically investigating the North Brazil Undercurrent (NBUC). Results show that the NBUC's velocity, transport, and vertical extent varied between spring 2015 and fall 2017, reflecting differences in current speed and direction along the coast. The impact of mesoscale eddies on the circulation pattern was also analyzed.

Spatial patterns in planktonic cnidarian distribution in the western boundary current system of the tropical South Atlantic Ocean

Everton Giachini Tosetto et al.

Summary: This study reveals the dominance of oceanic cnidarian species in coastal regions of the Western Tropical South Atlantic, driven by strong currents in marine western boundary systems. The typical oceanic cnidarian community, dominated by holoplanktonic siphonophores, extends from the Fernando de Noronha Chain to the narrow continental shelf.

Distribution, vertical migration, and trophic ecology of lanternfishes (Myctophidae) in the Southwestern Tropical Atlantic

Leandro Nole Eduardo et al.

Summary: Lanternfishes are a diverse and abundant fish family in the Southwestern Tropical Atlantic, with different species exhibiting varying patterns of prey composition and migratory behavior. Many of these species migrate to the surface at night to feed and serve as a central food source for mesopelagic and bathypelagic predators, connecting shallow and deep-sea ecosystems. Environmental conditions have minimal impact on the horizontal structure of lanternfish assemblages in this region.

Pelagic deep-sea fauna observed on video transects in the southern Norwegian Sea

Philipp Neitzel et al.

Summary: This study conducted an investigation on the diversity, distribution, and abundance of pelagic fauna in the southern Norwegian Sea using an underwater video observation system, revealing abundant taxa such as chaetognaths, the trachymedusa Aglantha digitale, and appendicularians. The findings provide unprecedented insights into the importance of gelatinous zooplankton in the oceanic food web and discuss the distributions of these fauna, some of which are the first record for the Norwegian Sea.
