Finding the Signal in the Noise-Interday Reliability and Seasonal Sensitivity of 84 Countermovement Jump Variables in Professional Basketball Players

Richard A. J. Mercer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the measurement characteristics of countermovement jump (CMJ) variables in basketball athletes using different variable selection criteria. Results showed that averaging across multiple tests provided more reliable data for CMJ variables. Furthermore, many CMJ measures displayed seasonal changes that were greater than the measurement noise, suggesting the importance of regularly assessing and improving the reliability and sensitivity of CMJ measurement in athletes.

The Validity of Hawkin Dynamics Wireless Dual Force Plates for Measuring Countermovement Jump and Drop Jump Variables

Andrew J. Badby et al.

Summary: Force plate testing is becoming more popular in sports due to the availability of commercially available, portable, and affordable force plate systems. This study aimed to determine the concurrent validity of the HD wireless dual force plate hardware for assessing vertical jumps. The results showed that the HD system can be considered a valid alternative to the industry gold standard for assessing vertical jumps.

Epidemiology of injuries in male and female youth football players: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Francisco Javier Robles-Palazon et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of injury data in male and female youth football players. The results showed that the injury incidence rate was 5.70/1000 hours in males and 6.77/1000 hours in females. Match injuries were more common than training injuries. The lower extremity was the most common location for injuries in both sexes. Muscle/tendon injuries were most common in males, while joint/ligament injuries were most common in females. The incidence rate of injuries increased with age in males. Elite male players had a higher match injury incidence than sub-elite players. Limited data were available for females in terms of age groups and levels of play.

Prospective epidemiological study of basketball injuries during one competitive season in professional and amateur Spanish basketball

J. Mateos Conde et al.

Summary: The study found a high rate of injuries in basketball players, with ankle and knee injuries being the most common. Recurrent injuries were the main contributing factor. Preventive measures should be implemented at an early age for the whole team.

Analyzing Force-Time Curves: Comparison of Commercially Available Automated Software and Custom MATLAB Analyses

Justin J. Merrigan et al.

Summary: This study compared the analysis of force-time curves using commercial and custom software. Hawkin Dynamics software showed slight differences in analysis procedures but had low error rates, while ForceDecks software had larger errors. After visually confirming landmarks, many metrics were consistent across different software analyses, but it is important to compare only metrics that show agreement.

Trends in match injury risk in professional male rugby union: a 16-season review of 10 851 match injuries in the English Premiership (2002-2019): the Professional Rugby Injury Surveillance Project

Stephen W. West et al.

Summary: The Professional Rugby Injury Surveillance Project is the largest and longest running rugby union injury surveillance project globally, focusing on the highest level of rugby in England. The study found stable injury incidence and proportion of injured players over time, but an increase in the mean and median severity of injuries, with concussion becoming the most common injury from 2011 to 2019. The rise in overall injury severity and concussion incidence highlight the need for continued efforts to reduce concussion risk and better understand changes in injury severity.

Applying Force Plate Technology to Inform Human Performance Programming in Tactical Populations

Justin J. Merrigan et al.

Summary: Force plate assessments are used to examine and monitor physical capabilities and movement strategies, rather than predicting injuries. Before using force plate technologies, users need to develop a data management plan, select appropriate force plates, and design testing protocols. These assessments can be integrated into existing testing, serve as separate testing batteries, or be conducted more frequently to monitor training adaptations and neuromuscular fatigue.
