Risk factors for unilateral cranial cruciate ligament rupture diagnosis and for clinical management in dogs under primary veterinary care in the UK

C. Pegram et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate demographic risk factors associated with the diagnosis and management of unilateral CCL rupture in dogs. It used a retrospective cohort study design and included 1000 CCL rupture cases and 500,000 non-cases. The findings identified specific demographic and clinical factors that increase the odds of CCL rupture diagnosis and the likelihood of surgical management.

Breed and conformational predispositions for prolapsed nictitating membrane gland (PNMG) in dogs in the UK: A VetCompass study

Dan G. O'Neill et al.

Summary: This study based on UK primary care veterinary practices data shows that prolapsed nictitating membrane gland (PNMG) is the most common disorder of the third eyelid in dogs, with an annual prevalence of 0.20%. Dogs under 1 year old have a 10.82 times higher odds of PNMG compared to dogs aged 2 to 4 years. Purebred dogs, brachycephalic skull conformation breeds, and insured dogs are more predisposed to PNMG.

Target Trial Emulation for Transparent and Robust Estimation of Treatment Effects for Health Technology Assessment Using Real-World Data: Opportunities and Challenges

Manuel Gomes et al.

Summary: Target trial emulation (TTE) is a method used in non-randomised studies using real-world data to reduce biases, by applying design principles from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to mimic RCT data. It helps avoid common design flaws and optimize analysis methods, providing a transparent and accessible framework to minimize confounding and assess potential limitations of real-world data in HTA decision-making.

Ironing out the wrinkles and folds in the epidemiology of skin fold dermatitis in dog breeds in the UK

Dan G. O'NeillI et al.

Summary: Skin fold dermatitis is an inflammatory condition that occurs on closely apposing skin surfaces, and extreme conformations towards folded skin in many dog breeds are associated with higher risk. This study used veterinary data to report the frequency, risk factors, and clinical management of skin fold dermatitis in the UK. The study found that certain breeds, particularly those with extreme brachycephalic conformation, were at a significantly higher risk of developing the condition.

Randomized controlled trial demonstrates nutritional management is superior to metronidazole for treatment of acute colitis in dogs

Adam J. Rudinsky et al.

Summary: This study describes the outcome of dietary management for canine noninfectious acute colitis and the concurrent oral administration of metronidazole using a randomized controlled clinical trial. The addition of metronidazole negatively affected the fecal dysbiosis index, but no adverse effects or complications were observed.

An introduction to inverse probability of treatment weighting in observational research

Nicholas C. Chesnaye et al.

Summary: This article introduces the concept of inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) and its application in adjusting for measured confounding in observational research, using a clinical example in nephrology. IPTW involves calculating the probability of exposure to the risk factor or intervention of interest based on individual characteristics (propensity score), and then calculating weights as the inverse of the propensity score. Application of these weights creates a pseudopopulation with balanced confounders across exposed and unexposed groups in studies, and it can also be applied in longitudinal studies to address informative censoring and time-dependent confounding.

Overview and Evaluation of Existing Guidelines for Rational Antimicrobial Use in Small-Animal Veterinary Practice in Europe

Fergus Allerton et al.

Summary: This study aimed to map and qualitatively assess antimicrobial stewardship guidelines for cats and dogs in Europe, highlighting the lack of national guidelines in several countries and identifying key principles for guidance development. The AGREE II analysis revealed methodological limitations of current guidelines, emphasizing the need for a structured approach to improve antimicrobial stewardship in the future.

Association of a Shortened Duration of Adjuvant Chemotherapy With Overall Survival Among Individuals With Stage III Colon Cancer

Summary: This study showed that explicit emulation of a target trial better approximated results from an analogous well-conducted randomized clinical trial. It suggests that a shortened duration of adjuvant chemotherapy may not significantly impact overall survival.

Comparison of the Therapeutic Effect of Treatment with Antibiotics or Nutraceuticals on Clinical Activity and the Fecal Microbiome of Dogs with Acute Diarrhea

Giulia Pignataro et al.

Summary: Acute diarrhea in dogs is a common reason for veterinary visits, and antibiotics are often used in treatment, although it is generally self-limiting. The study aimed to compare the effects of an antibiotic combination and a nutraceutical product in dogs with acute non-hemorrhagic diarrhea. The results suggest that the nutraceutical treatment had similar clinical effects to antibiotics and could be a valid alternative therapy.
