Prevention of postoperative delirium after cardiovascular surgery: A team-based approach

Kiichi Enomoto et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of the Delirium Team Approach program for preventing delirium after cardiovascular surgery. A total of 256 patients who underwent cardiac or thoracic vascular surgery between May 2017 and May 2020 were retrospectively studied. The implementation of the Delirium Team Approach program significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative delirium. The program included educational sessions, review of preprinted physician orders, and routine delirium screening.

Exploratory Study of Pharmacists' Monitoring Methods Based on Left Ventricular Function for Hypermagnesemia by Magnesium Oxide in Heart Failure

Yuki Asai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of serum magnesium monitoring by protocol-based pharmaceutical management (PBPM) and the effect of left ventricular function on hypermagnesemia in heart failure patients. The results suggest that serum magnesium monitoring by PBPM can contribute to the early detection of hypermagnesemia and prevent its progression. Exacerbation of heart failure and reduced left ventricular diastolic capacity are associated with hypermagnesemia.

Polypharmacy is predictive of postoperative complications in older adults undergoing ventral hernia repair

Timothy R. Holden et al.

Summary: This study found that polypharmacy is common in older adults undergoing TAR and is associated with in-hospital complications, postoperative delirium, cardiac events, ICU stay, length of stay, and discharge to a skilled nursing facility.

Risk factors for postoperative delirium on oxygen delivery-guided perfusion

Hiroshi Mukaida et al.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated the risk factors for postoperative delirium in patients who underwent oxygen delivery-guided perfusion. The study found that the number of transfused red blood cell units, intubation time, and low hematocrit level were associated with postoperative delirium.

Delirium in older patients undergoing aortic valve replacement: incidence, predictors, and cognitive prognosis

Marc Humbert et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence, predictors, and relationship with cognitive performance of delirium in older patients undergoing aortic valve replacement surgery. Delirium occurred in about one in five patients, mostly within the first three postoperative days, suggesting the importance of early identification and intervention strategies. Cognitive performance and STS risk scores were found to be associated with delirium incidence in older patients undergoing AVR.

Availability of preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio to predict postoperative delirium after head and neck free-flap reconstruction: A retrospective study

Hirotaka Kinoshita et al.

Summary: The preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may serve as an effective predictor of postoperative delirium (POD) in patients undergoing head and neck free-flap reconstruction, with higher NLR values being independently associated with increased risk of POD. Patients with POD had significantly longer stays in the intensive care unit, suggesting that preoperative NLR could help identify patients at risk of delirium.

Comparative effectiveness of pharmacological interventions to prevent postoperative delirium: a network meta-analysis

Sun-Kyung Park et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively compared the pharmacological interventions to prevent postoperative delirium, finding that dexmedetomidine, haloperidol, and atypical antipsychotics were more effective than placebo in reducing delirium incidence. Dexmedetomidine and atypical antipsychotics had the highest probabilities to be the best interventions, but there were significant heterogeneity and small study effects that prevented firm conclusions.

Review of Postoperative Delirium in Geriatric Patients After Hip Fracture Treatment

Anita M. Albanese et al.

Summary: Postoperative delirium is a serious complication in geriatric patients undergoing hip fracture surgeries, with potentially modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors contributing to its development. Prevention and early recognition are crucial in managing POD, which is associated with increased length of hospital stay, cost, morbidity, and mortality.
