Defining Training and Performance Caliber: A Participant Classification Framework

Alannah K. A. McKay et al.

Summary: This paper presents a 6-tiered Participant Classification Framework that can be used to classify individuals with different exercise backgrounds and athletic abilities. The framework can be applied prospectively and retrospectively in research, providing uniformity in classification practices.

Performance-determining factors in biathlon prone shooting without physical stress

Miika Koykka et al.

Summary: This study investigated the key factors influencing prone shooting performance in biathlon. Results showed that stability of hold, aiming accuracy, cleanness of triggering, and timing of triggering are crucial technical components for successful shooting. Better stability of hold is a general prerequisite for better shooting performance, along with the importance of aiming accuracy, cleanness of triggering, and timing of triggering, as well as a high pre-shot trigger force level. These findings could guide biathletes in emphasizing relevant technical aspects in their shooting training.

Developmental Training Model for the Sport Specialized Youth Athlete: A Dynamic Strategy for Individualizing Load-Response During Maturation

Neeru Jayanthi et al.

Summary: Existing data mainly focus on adult or professional athletes, emphasizing increasing workload capacity and performance. Development pathways for youth athletes prioritize multisport participation to minimize injury risk. Factors to consider when developing training programs for young athletes include the impact of sport specialization, biological maturation, motor deficits, and workload progressions.

Current Sport Organization Guidelines From the AMSSM 2019 Youth Early Sport Specialization Research Summit

Adam S. Tenforde et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed youth sport development guidelines across soccer, basketball, ice hockey, and swimming. It found consensus on the emphasis of early skill development and access to well-trained coaches, but inconsistencies in volume recommendations and lack of proposed methods to monitor athlete well-being. The study highlights the need to create a framework for youth sport specialization to provide specific and consistent guidelines.

Physiological profiles and training loads of international level male and female cross-country skiers and biathletes

E. B. Myakinchenko et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological profiles of elite male and female cross-country skiers and biathletes in relation to their annual training load volumes and determine if these differences explained variances in racing speeds. The results indicated that cross-country skiers had significantly higher strength and endurance training load volumes compared to biathletes. They also showed higher values in certain body metrics but equal maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) and gross efficiency. Gender differences were observed in training intensity, with females tending to have lower values. The study suggests that training load volumes and physiological profiles play a role in racing speeds for these athletes.

Training and illness characteristics of cross-country skiers transitioning from junior to senior level

Oyvind Karlsson et al.

Summary: The study found that a group of well-trained cross-country skiers progressively increased their annual endurance training volume from age 16 to 22, primarily through an increase in low-intensity and sport-specific training. Additionally, higher training volumes were associated with a lower number of self-reported illness days.

Comparison of High and Low Responders to a Cross-Country Skiing Talent Transfer Program: A Coach's Perspective

Stig Arve Saether et al.

Summary: In a study examining the differentiation of athletes with successful and non-successful development during a cross-country skiing talent transfer program, coaches found that high-responding athletes showed greater development in physiological and technical capacities, which was linked to higher motivation and better ability to handle adversity in the development process. Coaches considered the program effective but suggested that successful transfer of athletes to a world class level in a complex sport like XC skiing requires a multidisciplinary selection process and a longer timeframe.

Aiming strategy affects performance-related factors in biathlon standing shooting

Miika Koykka et al.

Summary: The study found that there was no significant difference in shooting performance between biathletes using different aiming strategies. Athletes using the hold strategy should focus on stabilizing the aiming point before triggering and aiming at the center, whereas athletes using the timing strategy benefit from decreasing total velocity during the final approach and minimizing aiming point movement right before triggering.
