Quantifying MCPA load pathways at catchment scale using high temporal resolution data

Kevin Atcheson et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydrological pathway processes of the agricultural acid herbicide MCPA in drinking water source catchments. The findings suggest that MCPA is mainly lost through acute, storm-dependent processes during the spraying season, with a portion being transported via deep baseflows. Reducing usage and implementing surface pathway disconnection measures are effective mitigation options.

Review: Presence, distribution and current pesticides used in Spanish agricultural practices

Mariano Gonzalez Garcia et al.

Summary: Intensive agriculture is necessary to ensure sufficient food supply for the growing population, and the use of pesticides helps maintain maximum productivity. However, pesticide contamination of surface waters is a major problem. Despite the lack of a rigorous monitoring program, scientific studies have been published to disseminate information on the toxic effects of each pesticide. This review provides an overview of the presence and distribution of widely used pesticides in Spain, as well as their environmental implications.

Agrochemical leaching reduction in biochar-amended tropical soils of Belize

Gerardo O. Aldana et al.

Summary: The study showed that agrochemical sorption was higher in biochar-amended soils compared to soils without biochar. Biochar amendment was effective in reducing leaching of selected agrochemicals, but a trade-off between sorptive capacity of biochar and changes in soil hydrology was identified. Careful consideration of potential trade-offs is necessary for widespread implementation of biochar in Belizean tropical soils.

Development of biomass-derived biochar for agronomic and environmental remediation applications

M. Waqas et al.

Summary: The increasing interest in biochar application has led to multidisciplinary research in science, focusing on its potential for agronomic and environmental applications. This study examines the influence of controlling parameters during biochar production and discusses various mechanisms explaining its potential for applications. Future research should emphasize developing biochar with high redox functional groups and sorption potential, and understanding its behavior under natural field conditions.

Summary: Biochar, produced from crop residues, shows potential for sorption and remediation of pesticides, reducing their bioavailability and toxicity. Factors such as pyrolysis temperature, feedstock, and specific surface area influence biochar properties. More research is needed to study biochar aging, desorption potential, pesticide co-contaminations, and field applications for sustainable agricultural systems.
