Organic pollutants degradation using plasma with simultaneous ammonification assisted by electrolytic two-cell system

Kien Tiek Wong et al.

Summary: Atmospheric non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma has been widely studied due to its cost-efficiency and environmental friendliness. However, its limitations have hindered its extensive application. In this study, the DBD plasma was used to degrade three pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), and the combination of plasma and electrolysis was found to be an effective approach for their removal. The production of NH3 as a by-product also adds value to the system.

Removal of a mixture of antibiotics in water using nonthermal plasma

Florin Bilea et al.

Summary: A dielectric barrier discharge with falling liquid film was utilized to degrade amoxicillin and sulfamethoxazole antibiotics in water. The antibiotics exhibited exponential decrease and similar half-life times of 4-9 minutes during plasma treatment. Higher discharge power led to faster removal of the contaminants, while the energy efficiency remained consistent at 3-4 g/kWh with a 50% yield. Oxygen significantly improved the energy yield by promoting the formation of reactive oxygen species. Moreover, the degradation of antibiotics in mixture mainly relied on the initial concentration, indicating similar reactivity of the investigated compounds.

Molecular growth paths and dust-particles nucleation precursors in Ar/C2H2 low pressure discharges

Gautier Tetard et al.

Summary: A numerical model was used to investigate the effect of acetylene concentration on molecular growth and solid particle nucleation in argon-acetylene CCRF discharges. The results showed that at low acetylene concentrations, the ionization kinetic is driven by the Penning process and the molecular growth is governed by neutral polyynes. On the other hand, at high acetylene concentrations, the ionization kinetic is driven by the electron-impact process, leading to increased concentration of neutral polyynes and enhanced nucleation rate.

A comprehensive review on eco-toxicity and biodegradation of phenolics: Recent progress and future outlook

Namita Panigrahy et al.

Summary: The growth of industries leads to the discharge of phenolic pollutants into water, posing severe threats to human health and biodiversity. Biodegradation is a sustainable and efficient method for removing these toxic pollutants, but challenges remain in enzymatic metabolic pathways, co-metabolic biodegradation, and industrial wastewater treatment. This review assesses the biological removal of phenolic pollutants and explores the ecotoxicity mechanisms, microbial enzymes and metabolic pathways involved in phenolic degradation, and the performance of various bioreactor systems. The prospects of resource recovery by photosynthetic bacteria that degrade phenolics are also discussed.

Degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by water falling film DBD Plasma/Persulfate: Reactive species identification and their role in SMX degradation

Kefeng Shang et al.

Summary: The study shows that persulfate can enhance the degradation of sulfamethoxazole in a water falling film dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor, with PMS performing better than PDS. Increasing the applied voltage, solution pH, and PMS/PDS concentration promotes SMX degradation. The reactive species generated from the activation of PMS/PDS by discharge plasma play a key role in SMX degradation, with center dot OH and SO4 center dot- being particularly important.

Mechanism and process of sulfamethoxazole decomposition with persulfate activated by pulse dielectric barrier discharge plasma

Yawen Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) in water using pulse dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma activated persulfate (PS). The results showed that PS addition significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of SMZ in the pulse DBD plasma system. Active species played a role in the degradation process and the system conditions affected the degradation efficiency. The study also explored the degradation pathways and analyzed the impact of water matrix on SMZ degradation.

Motivation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species by a novel non-thermal plasma coupled with calcium peroxide system for synergistic removal of sulfamethoxazole in waste activated sludge

Ai Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the combination of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and calcium peroxide (CaO2) was investigated for the attenuation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in sludge. The results showed evident synergistic effects between DBD and CaO2, with lower energy consumption compared to DBD alone. The DBD/CaO2 technology also promoted sludge disintegration, dewatering, heavy metal removal, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production.

A review on non-thermal plasma treatment of water contaminated with antibiotics

M. Magureanu et al.

Summary: Large amounts of antibiotics are being produced and consumed globally, leading to significant water contamination due to inefficient wastewater treatment. The high concentrations of antibiotics in the environment exert selective pressure on clinically important bacteria, increasing resistance prevalence. Efforts to improve contaminated wastewater treatment are essential in order to reduce uncontrollable spread of antibiotic resistance, as a drastic reduction in antibiotic use is not anticipated. This review paper analyzes recent progress on using non-thermal plasma technology to degrade antibiotics in water, discussing removal efficiency, energy efficiency, and degradation pathways for various classes of antibiotics. Ways to enhance the efficiency of the plasma process are also addressed.
