Plasma flow suppression by the linear helical mirror system

Anton V. Sudnikov et al.

Summary: The paper presents experimental results from the SMOLA device, which is the first facility with a helical mirror section of the magnetic system. The experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the helical mirror in suppressing axial plasma flow and pinching plasma density to the axis, providing good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Electron beam-plasma discharge in GDT mirror trap: particle-in-cell simulations

I. Timofeev et al.

Summary: The paper presents numerical simulations of the collective relaxation of an electron beam in a magnetized plasma, confirming the mechanism of discharge development observed in recent laboratory experiments. The simulations show a relaxed region of the beam near the entrance mirror, compressed by a strong magnetic field. The presence of transverse electric fields in the turbulent zone of a nonuniform plasma allows efficient acceleration of trapped particles to higher energies.

Electron beam-plasma discharge in GDT mirror trap: experiments on plasma start-up with electron gun

E. Soldatkina et al.

Summary: The paper describes experiments on injecting an electron beam into a gas at the gas dynamic trap (GDT) and develops a technique for creating a starting plasma with sufficient parameters for subsequent heating. It is found that a relatively thin electron beam ionizes plasma throughout the trap and stimulates plasma turbulence that accelerates some electrons to higher energies.

Experiments on ST40 at high magnetic field

Mikhail Gryaznevich

Summary: The combination of high beta values achieved in spherical tokamaks and high toroidal field produced by high temperature superconductor TF magnets opens up a path for lower-volume fusion reactors. The first prototype on this path, the high field spherical tokamak ST40, is now in operation and has shown promising results in terms of increased thermal energy, plasma temperature and density. The use of neutral beam injection has also demonstrated expected increases in plasma properties. Additionally, the study of merging-compression plasma formation has observed the formation of runaway electrons for the first time at high toroidal fields. Progress in HTS development is also presented.

Collisionless Particle Dynamics in Diamagnetic Trap

I. S. Chernoshtanov

Summary: This study investigates the collisionless motion of particles in an axisymmetric mirror machine under the condition of diamagnetic confinement, where the pressure of confined plasma equals the magnetic field pressure in the trap. The nonconservation of magnetic moment in the low magnetic field central region can lead to chaotic motion and collisionless particle loss. Particle confinement can be achieved through either adiabatic invariant conservation or fast azimuthal rotation. The criteria for particle confinement are determined and the lifetime of chaotically moving particles is estimated. The plasma confinement time in the diamagnetic trap under gas-dynamic outflow regime is also estimated.

Studies of Trapping and Accumulation of Fast Ions in Preliminary Experiments on Neutral Beam Injection at the GOL-NB Facility

V. V. Postupaev et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of preliminary experiments on neutral beam injection with a power of 1 MW into the central trap of the GOL-NB facility. The main focus of the study was the integration of all systems and basic diagnostics. The results show the attenuation of neutral beams in plasma and the parameters of the fast ion population. The study discusses the dynamics of accumulation and energy spectrum of the fast ion population formed in plasma as a result of neutral beam injection, and analyzes the physical mechanisms that explain the observed spectrum of fast ions.

Wall stabilization of the rigid ballooning m=1 mode in a long-thin mirror trap

Igor Kotelnikov et al.

Summary: This article studies the prospect of stabilizing the 'rigid' ballooning mode in a long-thin trap by using a conducting lateral wall around a column of isotropic plasma. The study finds that for effective wall stabilization, the beta parameter beta must exceed a critical value beta (crit). The dependence of beta (crit) on various factors such as mirror ratio, pressure profile, magnetic field profile, and vacuum gap width is also examined.

Two-dimensional MHD equilibria of diamagnetic bubble in gas-dynamic trap

M. S. Khristo et al.

Summary: This article presents a two-dimensional numerical model of diamagnetic bubble equilibria in an axisymmetric open trap using magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The study investigates the effect of magnetic field corrugation on the equilibrium and finds that the corrugation of the vacuum field leads to a moderate corrugation of the bubble boundary. The distribution of the diamagnetic field is also provided, which can be useful for optimizing the position of the wall-stabilization plates.

Collisionless particle dynamics in trap sections with helical corrugation

Ivan S. Chernoshtanov et al.

Summary: The collisionless particle dynamics in a helical magnetic mirror was investigated using Hamilton dynamics methods. In the small Larmor radius limit, the Hamiltonian is completely integrable and particle trajectories can be categorized into three types based on the direction of their drift velocity. The study also examined the structure of trajectories of resonant particles and the effect of weak axi-symmetrical corrugation on particle dynamics and the suppression of plasma flow efficiency through a helical mirror.

Observation of second harmonic electron cyclotron resonance heating and current-drive transition during non-inductive plasma start-up experiment in QUEST

Shinichiro Kojima et al.

Summary: The study of noninductive plasma current start-up using 2nd harmonic electron cyclotron resonance heating reveals a significant transition in electron heating and plasma current ramp-up. This transition is attributed to the favorable heating of tail electrons, with RF power absorption increasing linearly with tail electron temperature while power transfer to bulk electrons decreases with tail electron temperature. This understanding is crucial for considering plasma current start-up techniques in fusion reactors like JT-60 SA and ITER.
