Theory of Generation of Anomalous Scattering Spectra in Not-Dense Plasma under Conditions of Electron Cyclotron Microwave Heating at the Second Resonance Harmonic

E. Z. Gusakov et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the mechanisms for generating frequency spectra of anomalous scattering in not-dense plasma during microwave heating using the extraordinary wave at the second resonance harmonic. The developed theory is applied to interpret the results of electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECHR) experiments in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, where both Stokes and anti-Stokes frequency bands were observed shifted with respect to the microwave frequency. The explanation is provided for the paradoxical excess of the anti-Stokes spectral component amplitude over the Stokes component amplitude observed in multiple experiments.

Nonlinear decay of high-power microwaves into trapped modes in inhomogeneous plasma

A. Tancetti et al.

Summary: This study presents novel experimental evidence of parametric decay instability of microwave beams in the plasma edge of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator. The researchers propose that this instability is sustained by trapping of only one daughter wave in the non-monotonic density profile. Numerical modelling reproduces the power levels and spectral shapes of the detected microwave signal, and a theoretical power threshold is predicted. The study predicts that a fraction of power drained by daughter waves could significantly reduce the efficiency of microwave heating and current-drive systems in tokamaks and stellarators.

Summary: This study analyzed the absorption of microwaves during plasma heating and established a canonical profile transport model for microwave absorption. The research also formulated equivalence conditions for discharges in different tokamaks and applied the model to analyze future experiments of T-15MD.

Microwave diagnostics damage by parametric decay instabilities during electron cyclotron resonance heating in ASDEX Upgrade

S. K. Hansen et al.

Summary: Observations of microwave diagnostics damage in three discharges employing third-harmonic X-mode electron cylcotron resonance heating at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak are attributed to parametric decay instability (PDI), with PDI likely occurring near the O-point of a rotating mode, near the plasma center, and near the O-point of a locked mode. These PDIs generate strong microwave signals near multiples of half the ECRH frequency, causing the damage, with strategies proposed for mitigating the damage in future scenarios.
