Stigma receptors control intraspecies and interspecies barriers in Brassicaceae

Summary: Flowering plants have developed self-incompatibility and interspecific barriers to prevent the production of unfavorable offspring. Self-incompatibility is achieved by the interaction between S-Locus proteins and S-Locus receptor kinases to reject self-pollen, while interspecific barriers follow the rule of unilateral incompatibility on self-incompatible pistils and unilateral compatibility on self-compatible pistils. In Brassicaceae, S-Locus proteins and S-Locus receptor kinases activate FER-mediated reactive oxygen species production to reject incompatible pollen, while diverged pollen coat proteins trigger nitric oxide to facilitate pollen growth in a preferential manner, maintaining species integrity.

The female germ unit is essential for pollen tube funicular guidance in Arabidopsis thaliana

Summary: In angiosperm, the ovules provide guidance cues for pollen tube fertilization, with the micropyle guiding the tube over short distances and the funiculus guiding it over longer distances. However, little is known about the signaling for funicular guidance. In this study, the researchers discovered that the funiculus and the female gametophyte play important roles in pollen tube guidance, with the loss of a specific gene interrupting funicular guidance. Furthermore, they found that the guiding signal for funicular guidance is generated from the female gametophyte and that all the female germ unit cells are involved in funicular guidance.

An Overview of Oak Species in Pakistan: Past, Present, and Future Research Perspectives

Summary: This article introduces the formation of broad-leaved evergreen forests by Quercus spp. in the Hindu Kush and Himalayan regions of Pakistan. Seven species of Quercus genus have been identified, but they have received little attention in terms of their economic value and bioactivity evaluation. Quercus spp. show promise for commercial applications, but are currently threatened by human activities and climate change. This review highlights the importance of these forgotten species and discusses various aspects of their distribution, morphology, traditional uses, phytochemical constituents, and threats. The lack of molecular studies on populations of these species in Pakistan is a critical gap that needs to be addressed for conservation and management strategies. Future research directions in molecular approaches for Quercus are also discussed.

A chromosome-level genome assembly of the Chinese cork oak (Quercus variabilis)
