Formation of a Stable PSI-PSII Megacomplex in Rice That Conducts Energy Spillover

Eunchul Kim et al.

Summary: In green plants, photosystem I (PSI) and photosystem II (PSII) bind to their respective light-harvesting complexes to form supercomplexes. These supercomplexes further form megacomplexes, however, this is not observed in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The stable rice PSI-PSII megacomplex exhibits energy transfer capabilities, indicating species diversity in the formation and stability of photosystem megacomplexes.

Potassium alleviates over-reduction of the photosynthetic electron transport chain and helps to maintain photosynthetic function under salt-stress

Yanhui Che et al.

Summary: Potassium ions enhance photosynthetic tolerance to salt stress by minimizing the trans-thylakoid proton diffusion potential difference. This study investigated the effects of exogenous potassium on the transcription level and activity of proteins related to the photosynthetic electron-transport chain under salt stress. Exogenous potassium prevented the effects of salt stress on growth, potassium ion outflow from chloroplast, and downregulation of genes related to photosynthesis.

Change in the photochemical and structural organization of thylakoids from pea (Pisum sativum) under salt stress

Kunal Dhokne et al.

Summary: Salt stress has adverse effects on the photosynthetic process and thylakoid structure in Pea. Under high salt conditions, the net photosynthetic rate decreases, water use efficiency improves, and the photochemical efficiency of both photosystems is reduced. Non-photochemical quenching is decreased, while non-regulated energy dissipation increases, leading to the inactivation of PSII. Salt stress also affects the electron transport chain, causing disorganization of thylakoid grana and altering the macro-organization and super complexes of thylakoids.

Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of thylakoid complexes separated by Blue Native PAGE

Eva Sarvari et al.

Summary: In this study, the Blue/Clear-Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (BN PAGE) method was improved by using a detergent mixture of 1% (w/V) n-dodecyl-beta-d-maltoside plus 1% (w/V) digitonin for solubilisation and 4.3-8% gel gradients for separation. Several large photosystem (PS) I containing bands were detected, and it was found that these bands were PSI-NADH dehydrogenase-like megacomplexes in maize bundle sheath thylakoids and PSI complexes with different light-harvesting complex (LHC) complements (PSI-LHCII, PSI-LHCII*) in mesophyll thylakoids of lincomycin treated maize. Proposed methods for quantitative determination and comparison of the complexes in different samples were also provided.

Progress in understanding salt stress response in plants using biotechnological tools

Ulkar Ibrahimova et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the impact of salt stress on plants and the adaptive mechanisms of plants to salt stress, including physiological, metabolic, and molecular aspects. Salinization is a global environmental issue that negatively affects crop yield and poses a threat to world food security. Conventional breeding techniques have not been very successful in developing salt tolerant plants, and the transgenic approach has provided a pathway for addressing this issue.

Molecular landscape of etioplast inner membranes in higher plants

Davide Floris et al.

Summary: Research on etioplasts revealed that they are plastids that are photosynthetically inactive and accumulate when light levels are too low for chloroplast maturation. The inner membrane structure consists of a lattice and membrane regions, with proteins distributed differently. LPOR plays a key role in etioplasts, responsible for important functions such as chlorophyll biosynthesis and membrane geometry definition.
