Overexpression of banana GDP-L-galactose phosphorylase (GGP) modulates the biosynthesis of ascorbic acid in Arabidopsis thaliana

Siddhant Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: In this study, the banana cultivar Nendran was found to have the highest concentration of ascorbic acid (AsA). Five genes related to AsA synthesis were identified from the banana genome database, and three of them were shown to significantly enhance AsA levels in plant leaves through overexpression in Arabidopsis thaliana. The findings of this study have important implications for the development of AsA-rich plants, particularly in developing countries where staple foods are crucial.
