Genetically engineered crops for sustainably enhanced food production systems

Mughair Abdul Aziz et al.

Summary: Genetic modification of crops has focused on improving desirable traits, resulting in enhanced yields, quality, and stress tolerance. Despite the potential for sustainable food production, the widespread adoption of genetically modified (GM) crops faces challenges related to the environment, human health, and moral concerns. Scientific investigations are crucial in addressing these concerns. This review discusses the deployment of GM crops and their effects on sustainable food production systems, providing strategies to overcome the barriers. It also highlights the role of genome editing, particularly the CRISPR/Cas9 platform, in achieving sustainable development goals by 2030.

Opportunities for Orphan Crops: Expected Economic Benefits From Biotechnology

Patricia Zambrano et al.

Summary: An effective decision-making framework is crucial to support agricultural biotechnology innovation and ensure farmers' access to genetically modified crops, especially orphan crops. Balancing potential risks with economic benefits is a key challenge in the decision-making process, particularly when there is a lack of solid economic data. A study by IFPRI and local economists explores the expected economic benefits for farmers and consumers in sub-Saharan African countries from adopting GM orphan crops such as insect-resistant cowpea, disease-resistant cassava, and disease-resistant banana. The findings highlight the substantial economic benefits of timely adoption and planting of GM orphan crops, and emphasize the importance of an efficient and transparent policy environment and regulatory system to ensure the realization of projected economic benefits.

Genetically Modified (GM) Crop Use 1996-2020: Environmental Impacts Associated with Pesticide Use CHANGE

Graham Brookes

Summary: This study assesses the environmental impacts of changes in pesticide use with GM crops globally. The widespread adoption of GM insect resistant and herbicide tolerant seed technology has resulted in a decrease of 748.6 million kg (-7.2%) of active ingredient in pesticide application, reducing the environmental impact by 17.3% between 1996 and 2020. The technology that has had the biggest impact is insect resistant cotton, which has saved 339 million kg of active ingredient and reduced the associated environmental impact by about a third.

Summary: This paper presents a global assessment of COVID-19's impacts on food systems in low and middle-income countries, based on the analysis of 337 documents from 62 countries. The analysis confirms that the accessibility of food has been most affected, while the availability of food has not been significantly impacted. Overall data suggests that food systems showed resilience and adaptation to the disruptions caused by the pandemic, but at the cost of severe disruptions for the majority of actors involved. Grocery stores and supermarkets, on the other hand, made substantial profits in 2020.

Summary: The main objectives of this research are to characterise the current contexts of food security, its relationship with sustainability, and identify proposals and actions that may support the design of more adjusted policies in the future. The analysis of statistical information from the FAOSTAT database shows that undernutrition is more impacted by the availability of food and nutrients and political stability than by the level of GDP, suggesting that development level is not the primary explanation for nutrition problems. It is suggested to improve agrifood supply chains and support political stability to mitigate undernutrition worldwide and ensure global access to sustainable and healthy diets.
