Predicting the oxidation states of Mn ions in the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II using supervised and unsupervised machine learning

Muhamed Amin

Summary: By training a model on Mn compounds, the oxidation states of the oxygen-evolving complex can be predicted, allowing for the prediction of the S-state in X-ray, XFEL, and CryoEM structures. The model agrees with the XFEL structures in the dark S-1 state, but significant discrepancies are observed for the excited XFEL states and the dark states of the X-ray and CryoEM structures. There is also a mismatch between the predicted S-states within the two monomers of the same dimer, mainly in the excited states.

Feeding the world: impacts of elevated [CO2] on nutrient content of greenhouse grown fruit crops and options for future yield gains

Nicholas H. Doddrell et al.

Summary: Several long-term studies have shown that growing crops under elevated CO2 can increase photosynthesis and lead to higher yield, flavor, and nutritional content. For example, tomatoes grown at 1000 ppm CO2 have shown yield increases of up to 80%, which is consistent with industry practices. This review focuses on evaluating the impact of elevated CO2 on fruit yield and nutritional quality over 50 years, and suggests the need for engineering improvements to optimize plant growth under high CO2 conditions.
