Chitosan nanoparticles support the impact of arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi on growth and sugar metabolism of wheat crop

Ahmed M. Saleh et al.

Summary: The application of chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) can enhance the symbiosis between arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi (AMF) and wheat, leading to improved growth, physiology, and metabolism in the plant. CSNPs treatment increased AMF colonization, auxin and strigolactone levels, and flavonoid exudation in the roots. This, in turn, resulted in higher plant biomass production, photosynthetic rate, and accumulation of health promoting compounds.

Increasing atmospheric CO2 differentially supports arsenite stress mitigating impact of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in wheat and soybean plants

Hamada AbdElgawad et al.

Summary: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a beneficial role in plant growth under heavy metal stress, and their symbiotic associations can be improved by elevated CO2 (eCO2). This study compared the regulatory mechanisms of AMF symbiosis under arsenite (As-III) toxicity in wheat and soybean. The results showed that eCO2 significantly increased AMF colonization by inducing auxin levels and improving sugar metabolism. As-III decreased plant growth and increased photorespiration and oxidative injury, with soybean being more sensitive to oxidative stress. Exposure to eCO2 reduced oxidative damage, especially in soybean, through the reduction in photorespiration and stronger antioxidant and detoxification defense systems. The study provides mechanistic insights into the impact of AMF, eCO2, and their interaction on As-stressed grass and legume plants, which can contribute to better strategies for mitigating As-III phytotoxicity.

Hossein Hammami et al.

Summary: The study revealed that heavy metals toxicity had significant effects on the biological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics of common beans, including root and shoot dry weight, pod number, and various enzyme activities. Among the heavy metals, cadmium had the most adverse effects compared to lead and nickel. The increase in lead concentration in soil led to improvements in translocation factors and translocation efficiencies.

Summary: This study investigates the bio-efficacy of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on onion plants grown in sandy soil under a drip irrigation system. Results show that AMF inoculation and P fertilizer application significantly increase the growth and yield of onion plants, as well as enhance phosphorus concentration and nitrogen utilization. The economic yield of onion plants inoculated with AMF and fertilized with P fertilizer is much higher than the control group without AMF.

Interactive influence of elevated CO2 and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on sucrose and coumarin metabolism in Ammi majus

Afrah E. Mohammed et al.

Summary: The elevated level of CO2 and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been found to enhance plant growth and development as well as quality. This study investigated the influence of elevated CO2 and AMF on sucrose and phenylpropanoid metabolism in Ammi majus. The results showed that elevated CO2 and AMF individually or combined improved plant biomass and photosynthesis, as well as nutrient concentrations. Additionally, the levels of sucrose, glucose, fructose, and certain key enzymes involved in their metabolism, as well as phenylpropanoids metabolites, were enhanced by the treatments. The synergistic effect of elevated CO2 and AMF was observed for most parameters. These findings suggest that the combined application of elevated CO2 and AMF can affect the global metabolism of A. majus and promote the accumulation of phyto-molecules, such as coumarin, which may improve its medicinal and pharmacological applications.
