Testing phaeophytinization as an index of ozone stress in trees

Evgenios Agathokleous et al.

Summary: Ground-level ozone pollution limits photosynthesis in trees and plants by degrading chlorophylls. The effect of ozone on phaeophytinization in leaves of higher plants is largely unknown. This study found that ozone exposure affects phaeophytinization in a bimodal manner, depending on the intensity of ozone stress. The absorbance ratio OD665/OD665a shows promise as an index of ozone stress, but further research is needed to understand the underlying biochemical mechanisms.

Physiological and transcriptional response of carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism in tomato plant leaves to nickel ion and nitrogen levels

Shuhao Li et al.

Summary: This study found that nickel ion can regulate the carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism of tomato plant leaves, especially under low nitrogen supply. Transcriptome analysis of the leaves revealed that genes associated with nitrogen metabolism were downregulated under low nitrogen conditions, while those regulated by nickel ion showed high transcript abundances.

Can 2,4-D promote the hormesis effect in upland rice?

Leonardo Marsala et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of low doses of 2,4-D on the agronomic traits of upland rice. The results showed that applying low doses of 2,4-D during the tillering stage can increase nitrogen content, SPAD index, and yield. Applying 2.04 g a.e ha(-1) of 2,4-D resulted in a 19% increase in the number of spikelets per panicle.

A green method for removing chromium (VI) from aqueous systems using novel silicon nanoparticles: Adsorption and interaction mechanisms

Sajid Mehmood et al.

Summary: In this study, silicon nanoparticles were synthesized using the horsetail plant as a green source and successfully used as an adsorbent for chromium (Cr (VI)) removal. The batch test results showed that the silicon nanoparticles had a high adsorption capacity for Cr (VI). Kinetic and isotherm models were used to analyze the adsorption behavior, and the main mechanism was confirmed to be ion exchange and surface complexation. Overall, this research provides a green and new alternative for the removal of Cr (VI) pollution.

Selenium increases photosynthetic capacity, daidzein biosynthesis, nodulation and yield of peanuts plants (Arachis hypogaea L.)

Matheus Luis Oliveira Cunha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of selenium application on various aspects of peanut plants, including photosynthetic pigments, oxidant metabolism, flavonoids biosynthesis, nodulation, and agronomic traits. The results showed that selenium fertilization increased the concentration of photosynthetic pigments, activity of antioxidant enzymes, as well as growth and yield of peanut plants. It also improved nitrogen assimilation efficiency and promoted the synthesis of certain compounds in the roots, leading to increased nodulation and transportation of nutrients to the leaves.

Residual Effects of Nickel and Its Interaction with Applied Zinc and NPK Improve the Growth, Yield, and Nutritional Quality of Cowpea and Urease Activity of Soil Grown in Vertisols

Sarbasree Goswami et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the residual effects of nickel (Ni) in soil on the growth and yield of cowpea. The results showed that the application of 10 mg Ni kg(-1) in the previous crop along with 10 mg kg(-1) of zinc (Zn) in the current experiment resulted in the highest plant height, number of branches, number of pods, stover yield, and seed yield of cowpea. The concentration of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) in the grain and stover increased significantly up to 10 mg kg(-1) of residual Ni, but decreased beyond this level. The urease activity and available nitrogen content in the soil after harvest also increased with the increase in residual Ni content.

Physiological impact of flavonoids on nodulation and ureide metabolism in legume plants

Marco Antonio Bosse et al.

Summary: Legume plants from the Fabaceae family have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia through a symbiotic relationship with rhizobia bacteria. Flavonoids, especially isoflavonoids, induce nod genes in rhizobia bacteria and play a crucial role in nodulation and ureide production. Ureides are the main nitrogen transport form in tropical legumes, catabolized in leaves to produce amino acids and proteins essential for plant growth and yield.
