Introducing water factors improves simulations of maize stomatal conductance models under plastic film mulching in arid and semi-arid irrigation areas

Cheng Li et al.

Summary: Plastic film mulching in cropland can influence crop growth and affect the accuracy of soil-crop system simulations. Three models were used to evaluate the effects of plastic film mulching on stomatal conductance. The results showed that improved models considering water response functions and leaf-air temperature difference performed better, with increased coefficients of determination and modified efficiency coefficients, and decreased root mean square errors and relative errors.

Photosynthetic response to deep soil water deficit in a semiarid apple tree plantation

Min Yang et al.

Summary: Developing deep roots is important for trees in drylands to resist drought, but its impact on photosynthesis is not fully understood. An experiment on an apple tree plantation in China showed that deep soil water deficit led to severe water stress and significantly reduced stomatal conductance, photosynthesis rate, and transpiration rate. However, nonstomatal limitation did not differ between treatments, indicating that deep soil water deficit affects photosynthesis mainly through reduced stomatal conductance rather than damaging the photosynthetic apparatus.

A shift from isohydric to anisohydric water-use strategy as a result of increasing drought stress for young apple trees in a semiarid agroforestry system

Lianhao Zhao et al.

Summary: Prolonged drought caused by global warming can affect tree growth and sustainability by altering physiological traits. Agroforestry is a climate-smart approach that can mitigate extreme climate effects. However, the physiological adaptation of trees in agroforestry to prolonged drought in semi-arid regions is still unclear. Our three-year experiment showed that apple trees in agroforestry implemented a water-use strategy and exhibited different behaviors under moderate and severe drought conditions, indicating potential risks for apple trees under severe drought.

No carbon storage in growth-limited trees in a semi-arid woodland

R. Alexander Thompson et al.

Summary: Plant survival depends on the balance between carbon supply and demand. When carbon supply is limited, plants use stored carbohydrates to buffer demand. During drought, non-structural carbohydrates may accumulate if growth stops before photosynthesis. A field experiment with mature trees in a semi-arid woodland showed that growth and photosynthesis slow down in parallel as drought progresses, preventing carbon storage in two conifer species. The study suggests that growth and photosynthesis are independently regulated by water availability in plants' use of carbon.

Drought dampens the positive acclimation responses of leaf photosynthesis to elevated [CO2] by altering stomatal traits, leaf anatomy, and Rubisco gene expression in Pyrus

Lihua Hao et al.

Summary: Under future climate change with elevated CO2 concentration and more frequent drought events, the positive acclimation responses of Chinese pear plantations to elevated [CO2] in terms of leaf photosynthesis are dampened by modifying stomatal morphology and distribution, leaf anatomy, and Rubisco gene expression. Therefore, incorporating drought limitations into current coupled climate-carbon models is necessary to avoid overestimation of the positive responses of Chinese pear plantations to elevated [CO2] and to accurately predict forest carbon sequestration.

Summary: The study found that simulation of stomatal conductance (g(s)) can be effectively achieved through automatic monitoring of sap flux density (J(s)) and turgor pressure (Z) for different meteorological and soil water content conditions. Additionally, the simulated maximum stomatal conductance (g(smax)) was closely related to both aboveground and underground biomass production, suggesting potential applications for managing irrigation in smart agriculture and forestry in the future.

Interpreting the water use strategies of plantation tree species by canopy stomatal conductance and its sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit in South China

Lei Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tree transpiration, canopy stomatal conductance, and stomatal sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit of four typical plantation tree species in hilly lands of South China. The results showed different water use and stomatal behavior among the species, with broadleaved species generally possessing higher leaf area, specific leaf area, and deeper root depth. The study provides insights into the response of stomatal conductance to changing environment for typical species in subtropical moist forests, which is important for forest management and ecosystem stability under future climate changes.

Summary: Accurately simulating stomatal conductance is crucial for understanding carbon and water cycle processes and improving evapotranspiration simulations. This study found that the SW-BB model performed better in estimating evapotranspiration in a mobile dune ecosystem, especially during extreme drought periods. Incorporating soil moisture into stomatal conductance models significantly improved performance, with SM showing the highest sensitivity to stomatal conductance and evapotranspiration.

Quantifying canopy conductance in a pine forest during drought from combined sap flow and canopy surface temperature measurements

Tom Taborski et al.

Summary: Accurate determination of canopy conductance (g(s)) is essential for understanding water and CO2 exchange in forest canopies. This study used measurements of leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference and tree transpiration to calculate canopy g(s) in a pine forest. Different methods were compared, and it was found that they agreed under certain conditions but showed discrepancies under water stress conditions. The study also emphasized the importance of in situ surface temperature measurements for understanding canopy responses to environmental conditions.
