Titanium dioxide nanoparticles potentially regulate the mechanism(s) for photosynthetic attributes, genotoxicity, antioxidants defense machinery, and phytochelatins synthesis in relation to hexavalent chromium toxicity in Helianthus annuus L.

Dharmendra Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the toxic mechanisms induced by chromium (VI) and the potential ameliorative effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on its toxicity. The results show that chromium (VI) exposure negatively affects photosynthetic attributes, DNA damage, antioxidative defense mechanisms, and phytochelatin synthesis. However, exposure to TiO2 NPs alleviates chromium (VI) toxicity by regulating these factors and reducing the accumulation of chromium.

Cadmium stress in plants: A critical review of the effects, mechanisms, and tolerance strategies

Taoufik El Rasafi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the deleterious effects of cadmium in plants and the evolution of tolerance and resistance mechanisms. Cadmium negatively affects seed germination, early seedling growth, and plant biomass, as well as photosynthesis, water content, transpiration rate, and electrolyte leakage. Plants have developed detoxification mechanisms to exclude or accumulate cadmium, and utilize signaling pathways, hormone synthesis, antioxidant systems, and other strategies to adapt to cadmium toxicity. Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in reducing metal phytoavailability and enhancing plant morphological and physiological parameters for cadmium tolerance.
