Wheat yellow mosaic virus NIb targets TaVTC2 to elicit broad-spectrum pathogen resistance in wheat

Tianye Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a gene named TaVTC2 was identified in wheat, which was associated with wheat yellow mosaic virus (WYMV) infection. Overexpression of TaVTC2 increased viral accumulation, while knocking down TaVTC2 inhibited viral infection. Further investigation revealed that WYMV NIb directly bound to TaVTC2 and inhibited its enzymatic activity. TaVTC2 RNAi plants showed broad-spectrum disease resistance.

Maize miR167-ARF3/30-polyamine oxidase 1 module-regulated H2O2 production confers resistance to maize chlorotic mottle virus

Xuedong Liu et al.

Summary: Maize employs a signaling mechanism mediated by microR167-auxin response factor 3 and 30-polyamine oxidase 1 for defense and counterdefense against maize chlorotic mottle virus. The study showed that Zma-miR167 positively modulates the degree of resistance to MCMV by targeting ZmARF3 and ZmARF30, which negatively regulate resistance. However, MCMV uses p31 protein to counteract Zma-miR167-mediated defense. The results reveal the role of Zma-miR167-ZmARF3/30 module in restricting MCMV infection.

Reactive Oxygen Species Contribute to Symptomless, Extreme Resistance to Potato virus X in Tobacco

Lorant Kiraly et al.

Summary: In tobacco, the development of extreme resistance to PVX mediated by the Rx1 gene is preceded by the intensive accumulation of superoxide ROS and increased NADPH oxidase activities. Superoxide contributes directly to virus restriction during symptomless resistance. Inhibition of superoxide leads to weakened extreme resistance and induces a HR-like response. Moreover, the hydroxyl radical also plays a role in this symptomless antiviral defense.

Summary: The study identifies a virulence-related effector, CRN78, from the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora sojae, which promotes infection by inhibiting H2O2 accumulation in plants. Furthermore, CRN78 interacts with plant aquaporin proteins and regulates their phosphorylation for subsequent protein degradation. The phosphorylation mechanism of CRN78 on aquaporin proteins is highly conserved among higher plants and oomycete pathogens, suggesting a novel pathway for effector proteins to inhibit host cellular defenses.
