Enhancing the light reactions of photosynthesis: Strategies, controversies, and perspectives

Dario Leister

Summary: Photosynthesis is essential for life on Earth as it converts sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into energy and oxygen. Increasing its efficiency is believed to be a promising approach to enhance crop yields. Various strategies, from targeting specific components to redesigning the entire process, have been proposed and partially tested. However, these efforts are still in the early stage and have not yet achieved the desired outcome due to the complex interactions among cellular and metabolic processes involved in photosynthesis.

An exploratory steady-state redox model of photosynthetic linear electron transport for use in complete modelling of photosynthesis for broad applications

Lianhong Gu et al.

Summary: A photochemical model is developed to determine the redox conditions of electron carriers and enzymes for plant stress assessment and remotely sense photosynthesis. By using fluorometry measurements, the model confirms the oxidation of plastoquinol by cytochrome b(6)f complex is the bottleneck of photosynthetic electron transport (PET). It also suggests that improving this oxidation process may enhance the efficiency of PET and photosynthesis across different species.

The physiological basis for estimating photosynthesis from Chla fluorescence

Jimei Han et al.

Summary: This study establishes a quantitative framework for estimating photosynthesis based on a mechanistic light reaction model using Photosystem II chlorophyll fluorescence as an input. The framework is validated using 29 plant species at the leaf level and accurately predicts photosynthesis under varying environmental conditions.

A meta-analysis of projected global food demand and population at risk of hunger for the period 2010-2050

Michiel van Dijk et al.

Summary: Based on a review of 57 global food security projection and quantitative scenario studies published in the past two decades, it is projected that the total global food demand will increase by 35% to 56% by 2050, while the population at risk of hunger is expected to change by -91% to +8%. Both ranges are significantly lower than previous projections.

Perspectives on improving light distribution and light use efficiency in crop canopies

Rebecca A. Slattery et al.

Summary: In natural settings, plants compete for resources such as light to enhance survival and adaptability, while in modern agriculture, monoculture crop production focuses on overall yield and cooperation, potentially selecting the best competitors unintentionally rather than the best cooperators. Overinvestment in increasing light interception has led to sub-optimal light use efficiency and constrained crop yield improvement. Agricultural research suggests potential strategies for improving crop yield and closing the yield gap, including balancing light distribution and introducing alternative pigment types.
