Genetic mapping and confirmation of the Rdm3 locus underlying resistance to southern stem canker in soybean

Ethan Menke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic characteristics of soybean PI 398469, which exhibits resistance to southern stem canker (SSC). Two populations, F-2:3 and F-5-derived recombinant inbred lines (RILs), were developed through crosses with the susceptible breeding line G81-2057. The qRdm_14 locus on chromosome 14 was identified as a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) for SSC resistance. The findings provide useful information for breeding lines with resistance to SSC.

Metagenomic sequencing for detection and identification of the boxwood blight pathogen Calonectria pseudonaviculata

Shu Yang et al.

Summary: Pathogen detection and identification are crucial for controlling disease outbreaks. Traditional diagnostic methods may not be suitable for distinguishing morphologically similar fungal plant pathogens that grow slowly in culture. Whole genome metagenomic sequencing is a promising technique as it can detect any pathogen without culturing. In this study, the technique was successfully applied to the detection of the fungus Calonectria pseudonaviculata, the causal agent of boxwood blight disease.

Metagenomics Next Generation Sequencing (mNGS): An Exciting Tool for Early and Accurate Diagnostic of Fungal Pathogens in Plants

Fatma Seyma Gokdemir et al.

Summary: Crop output is directly affected by infections, particularly those caused by fungi. Accurate diagnosis of these threats is crucial and the use of genomic analyses, such as metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) and metabarcoding, is becoming increasingly important. These technologies allow for genotyping identification, species level identification, illumination of metabolic pathways, and determination of microbiota. The data obtained so far indicate that mNGS is a promising approach for fungal disease detection. This review focuses on the application of mNGS technology, including metabarcoding, for detecting fungal pathogens and its future developments.

Joao Vitor Maldonado dos Santos et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genetic relationships between Brazilian and US soybean cultivars and found that the Brazilian germplasm has a narrower genetic base than the US germplasm. The US cultivars were grouped according to maturity groups, while Brazilian cultivars were separated according to decade of release. Additionally, 73 SNPs that differentiate Brazilian and US soybean germplasm were identified, with high allelic frequency differences between Brazilian and US accessions for maturity-associated SNPs. The study revealed important genomic regions under selection during decades of soybean breeding in Brazil and the US.
