CellWall Signaling in Plant Development and Defense

Sebastian Wolf

Summary: Plant architecture is fundamentally different from other multicellular organisms as individual cells serve as osmotic bricks, monitored by cell wall surveillance pathways which relay information to the cell interior. Recent discoveries have shed light on the complexity of cell wall sensing and the diverse roles these pathways play in development, defense, stress response, and maintenance of cell integrity. However, many questions remain regarding cell wall perception mechanisms, molecular players, and signal transduction pathways in cellular behavior.

Plant-microbe interactions in the apoplast: Communication at the plant cell wall

Susanne Dora et al.

Summary: The apoplast is a continuous compartment in plants that connects cells between tissues and organs, serving as an important site for interaction between plants and microbes. The plant cell wall, occupying most of the apoplast, consists of polysaccharides, proteins, and ions. It acts as a physical barrier and nutrient source for the microbe, while also playing crucial roles in interkingdom detection, recognition, and response to other organisms. Both plant and microbe modify the cell wall and its environment to benefit from the interaction, and understanding these dynamic changes is essential for comprehending plant-microbe interactions.

Plant Cell Wall Integrity Perturbations and Priming for Defense

Sivakumar Swaminathan et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent developments in molecular mechanisms underlying maintenance of cell wall integrity in plant-pathogen and parasitic interactions. It covers topics such as the effect of altered expression of endogenous plant cell-wall-related genes or apoplastic expression of microbial cell-wall-modifying enzymes on cell wall integrity. The potential of targeted genetic modifications as a tool to study cell wall elicitors, signaling pathways, and disease resistance phenotypes is also discussed.
