Lignin Composition and Timing of Cell Wall Lignification Are Involved in Brassica napus Resistance to Stem Rot Caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

Kerstin Hoech et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of lignin in plant defense against Sclerotinia stem rot in oilseed rape. It found that a moderately resistant cultivar showed quicker and more effective defense activation through upregulation of lignin synthesis genes compared to a susceptible cultivar. The results highlight the importance of cell wall modification in quantitative resistance to stem rot by generating distinct lignin types in response to the pathogen.

Nucleotide-Binding Leucine-Rich Repeat Genes CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 Are Positive Modulators in the Cucumis sativus Defense Response to Sphaerotheca fuliginea

Xue Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified two NBS-LRR genes, CsRSF1 and CsRSF2, that regulate cucumber resistance to Sphaerotheca fuliginea. The expression levels of CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 were correlated with plant defense response against the pathogen, and overexpression of these genes improved resistance of cucumber to S. fuliginea. The results suggest that CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 genes play a positive role in enhancing cucumber resistance to S. fuliginea and can also regulate the expression of defense-related genes.
