Variation in cis-regulation of a NAC transcription factor contributes to tolerance in wheat

Hude Mao et al.

Summary: Drought is a major limitation to wheat production worldwide, and understanding the genetic components determining drought tolerance is crucial for wheat breeding. In this study, we identified a wheat NAC gene (TaNAC071-A) that is strongly associated with drought tolerance. Overexpression of TaNAC071-A improved drought tolerance in wheat through increased expression of stress-responsive genes and improved water-use efficiency. We also found that a 108-bp insertion in the promoter region of TaNAC071-A contributes to variation in drought tolerance among wheat accessions. Importantly, introgression of this insertion allele into drought-sensitive cultivars improved their drought tolerance, making it a valuable genetic resource for wheat breeding.

A NAC transcription factor, TaNAC5D-2, acts as a positive regulator of drought tolerance through regulating water loss in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Jianhui Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a drought-responsive NAC gene, TaNAC5D-2, was isolated and characterized in wheat. The results showed that TaNAC5D-2 functions as a positive regulator of drought tolerance through abscisic acid-mediated stomatal closure.

Genome-wide association study revealed TaHXK3-2A as a candidate gene controlling stomatal index in wheat seedlings

Shumin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic control of stomatal index in wheat seedlings. Through genome-wide association analysis and candidate gene association analysis, the researchers identified the genetic variation in the TaHXK3-2A gene to be significantly associated with stomatal index. Transgenic analysis confirmed that TaHXK3-2A regulates stomatal density through the glucose metabolic pathway.

TaGW2L, a GW2-like RING finger E3 ligase, positively regulates heading date in common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Daijing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified TaGW2L as a novel positive regulator of heading date in wheat. TaGW2L exhibited similar functions to TaGW2 and its overexpression led to an earlier heading date in wheat. This study sheds light on the role of TaGW2L in wheat heading date and provides potential applications for crop improvement.

Optical maps refine the bread wheat Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring genome assembly

Tingting Zhu et al.

Summary: This research successfully refined the genome sequence of bread wheat cv. Chinese Spring (CS), improving the v1.0 assembly by filling gaps and correcting the positions and orientations of some scaffolds. With increased contiguity, the numbers of transposable elements and intact TEs have increased, along with the high-confidence gene models mapped onto the new assembly. The reconciled assembly enhances the utility of the sequence for genetic mapping, comparative genomics, and studies on the biology of wheat.
