Coordinated resource allocation to plant growth-defense tradeoffs

Russell K. Monson et al.

Summary: Plant resource allocation patterns often show a tradeoff between growth (G) and defense (D), with ecological theory and discoveries in multi-omics biology helping to understand the mechanisms behind these tradeoffs. Multi-omic studies provide insight into the coordinated resource allocation that justifies optimality theory and calibrates G-D tradeoff commitments. The coordinated resource allocation hypothesis (CoRAH) integrates supply- and demand-side perspectives of previous G-D tradeoff theories.

Cytokinin-microbiome interactions regulate developmental functions

Rupali Gupta et al.

Summary: The interaction between plants and microbial communities is crucial for plant health. This study reveals that the composition of the phyllosphere microbiome is age-dependent in plants. The richness and diversity of the microbiome decrease as the plant ages, specifically in the presence of growth-promoting and resistance-inducing Bacilli. However, this decline is not observed in genotypes with high levels of the plant hormone cytokinin (CK). Furthermore, Bacillus isolates from CK-rich genotypes show the ability to alter gene expression and enhance yield and agricultural productivity. These results suggest that CK plays a role in supporting plant development through the modulation of the bacterial community.

The RALF1-FERONIA complex interacts with and activates TOR signaling in response to low nutrients

Limei Song et al.

Summary: The TOR kinase is activated in plants by interacting with the receptor kinase FERONIA (FER), which helps regulate nitrogen and amino acid signaling under low-nutrient conditions and promotes leaf growth.

TOR inhibition primes immunity and pathogen resistance in tomato in a salicylic acid-dependent manner

Iftah Marash et al.

Summary: All organisms need to sense and process information about nutrients, energy status, and environmental cues to determine growth and development. The conserved TOR protein kinase plays a crucial role in sensing nutritional information and connecting it to developmental and metabolic processes. When energy is abundant, TOR promotes cell division and suppresses catabolic processes. When nutrients are limited or environmental stresses are present, TOR is inactivated and catabolic processes are promoted. In tomato, inhibition of TOR leads to increased immune responses and disease resistance. This resistance is likely dependent on the salicylic acid pathway. TOR is thus a master regulator of the development-defence switch in plants.

Glucose-driven TOR-FIE-PRC2 signalling controls plant development

Ruiqiang Ye et al.

Summary: Research has found that glucose-activated TOR kinase in Arabidopsis thaliana controls genome-wide histone H3 trimethylation at K27, which regulates cell fate and development. The study identified FERTILIZATION-INDEPENDENT ENDOSPERM (FIE) as a TOR target, and showed that phosphorylation by TOR facilitates the movement of FIE from the cytoplasm to the nucleus, affecting the global H3K27me3 landscape, transcriptome, and organogenesis in plants.

Cytokinin Inhibits Fungal Development and Virulence by Targeting the Cytoskeleton and Cellular Trafficking

Rupali Gupta et al.

Summary: Cytokinin is an important plant growth and developmental hormone that not only plays a role in plant growth and development, but also directly inhibits the growth and virulence of fungal phytopathogens. This demonstrates a conserved role for cytokinins in yeast and fungal biology, suggesting that pathogen-host interactions may cause molecular adaptations in fundamental processes in eukaryotic biology.

Diverse nitrogen signals activate convergent ROP2-TOR signaling in Arabidopsis

Yanlin Liu et al.

Summary: Independent of nitrogen assimilation, nitrate and ammonium act as primary nitrogen signals to activate TOR in the Arabidopsis leaf primordium. Additionally, 15 proteinogenic amino acids can activate TOR, with the first amino acids generated from plant specific nitrogen assimilation, sulfur assimilation, and glycolate cycle showing the highest potency.

Method for the Production and Purification of Plant Immuno-Active Xylanase from Trichoderma

Gautam Anand et al.

Summary: Plants lack a circulating adaptive immune system, instead relying on a complex and efficient innate immune system based on defense mechanisms triggered by elicitors such as microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs). The fungal MAMP protein Ethylene Inducing Xylanase (EIX) from Trichoderma is a useful tool for studying plant immunity, eliciting defense responses in tobacco and tomato. Xylanases like EIX, hydrolytic enzymes mainly synthesized by fungi, play a role in xylan breakdown and can effectively induce plant defense responses.

Coordinating the morphogenesis-differentiation balance by tweaking the cytokinin-gibberellin equilibrium

Alon Israeli et al.

Summary: Morphogenesis and differentiation are critical for organ development and shape determination. In the case of compound-leaved tomato, a prolonged morphogenesis phase is essential for leaflet initiation, leading to the compound leaf form. Genetic factors such as LA, CLAU, TKN2, CK, and GA play important roles in balancing the morphogenesis-differentiation process, with pathways converging on the regulation of cytokinin and gibberellin levels. Comprehensive transcriptomic analyses provide further insights into the molecular basis of differentiation and morphogenesis in plants.

Leaf form diversification in an ornamental heirloom tomato results from alterations in two different HOMEOBOX genes

Hokuto Nakayama et al.

Summary: A study found that a single nucleotide deletion in the BEL-LIKE HOMEODOMAIN gene BIPINNATA of the heirloom tomato SiFT led to a complex leaf phenotype, while the narrow leaflet phenotype in SiFT was caused by repression of the ortholog of WUSCHEL RELATED HOMEOBOX 1, SOLANIFOLIA. The bip mutation in SiFT is likely de novo and unique to SiFT, not introgressed from other tomato genomes.
