The vacuolar H+/Ca transporter CAX1 participates in submergence and anoxia stress responses

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that plants lacking a vacuolar H+/Ca transporter are more tolerant to anoxia and submergence. Calcium signals play an important role in anoxia tolerance and could be used to improve the submergence tolerance of crops.

Beyond the patch-clamp resolution: functional activity of nonelectrogenic vacuolar NHX proton/potassium antiporters and inhibition by phosphoinositides

Antonella Gradogna et al.

Summary: This study combined patch-clamp technique with ratiometric fluorescence imaging to detect NHX antiport activity-induced acidification in Arabidopsis mesophyll vacuoles. NHX activity was specifically impaired by the low-abundance signaling lipid PI(3,5)P-2, which may regulate salt accumulation in plants by coordinately shutting down secondary active carriers responsible for cation and anion uptake inside the vacuole.

Arabidopsis thaliana zinc accumulation in leaf trichomes is correlated with zinc concentration in leaves

Felipe K. Ricachenevsky et al.

Summary: Zinc is a key micronutrient for plants and animals, and understanding its homeostasis can have positive impacts on agriculture and human health. This study found that the accumulation of zinc in the base of trichomes on leaves is influenced by the overall zinc concentration in the plant, offering a basis for further research on the molecular mechanisms involved in zinc spatial distribution in plants.
