Inundation depth stimulates plant-mediated CH4 emissions by increasing ecosystem carbon uptake and plant height in an estuarine wetland

Mingliang Zhao et al.

Summary: Plant-mediated CH4 emission is an important part of the ecosystem CH4 emission from vegetated wetlands. The relationships between plant-mediated CH4 emissions and inundation depth are still uncertain. Inundation depth decreased soil CH4 emissions but increased ecosystem CH4 emissions. Plant-mediated CH4 transport from Phragmites australis accounted for 99% of total ecosystem CH4 emissions, and inundation depth strongly stimulated plant-mediated CH4 emission.

Persistent and enhanced carbon sequestration capacity of alpine grasslands on Earth's Third Pole

Yuyang Wang et al.

Summary: The carbon sequestration capacity of alpine grasslands in the Tibetan Plateau plays a crucial role in regulating the regional carbon cycle. However, our understanding of its spatiotemporal dynamics and regulatory mechanisms is inadequate, limiting our ability to assess potential climate change impacts. Through our assessment, we found that the carbon sequestration of the alpine grasslands has been continuously increasing due to a warmer and wetter climate, with alpine meadows being stronger carbon sinks compared to semiarid and arid alpine steppes.

Exogenous melatonin increases salt tolerance in bitter melon by regulating ionic balance, antioxidant system and secondary metabolism-related genes

Morteza Sheikhalipour et al.

Summary: In this study, the comprehensive analysis of the physiological and ion balance, antioxidant system, as well as transcript analysis of defense-related and secondary metabolism-related genes in salt-stressed bitter melon plants treated with different levels of melatonin (0, 75 and 150 μM) demonstrated that melatonin treatment, especially at a concentration of 150 μM, alleviated the adverse impacts of salinity by promoting plant growth, enhancing photosynthesis, reducing oxidative stress, and regulating gene expression.

The relationship between the main leaf traits and photosynthetic physiological characteristics of Phragmites australis under different habitats of a salt marsh in Qinwangchuan, China

Qun Li et al.

Summary: Plant leaf morphological and photosynthetic physiological characteristics are key factors in the adaptability of plants to heterogeneous environments. This study found a close relationship between leaf morphology and photosynthetic activity in salt marsh plants, and observed adaptive changes in leaf characteristics based on habitat conditions.

Responses of leaf functional traits to different hydrological regimes and leaf economics spectrum in the water level fluctuation zone of Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Xiaoling Li et al.

Summary: The leaf functional traits of plants in the water level fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir were significantly affected by anti-seasonal flooding. The net photosynthetic rate of annual plants was higher than that of perennial plants, and there was a significant correlation between leaf phenotypic and photosynthetic traits. Soil water content and available phosphorus were the main factors affecting the leaf function of dominant species.

Melatonin-induced physiology and transcriptome changes in banana seedlings under salt stress conditions

Junya Wei et al.

Summary: This study found that melatonin can improve the salt tolerance of bananas by promoting healthy growth, reducing damage caused by salt stress, and enhancing physiological functions such as increased content of proline and soluble protein. Transcriptome sequencing also revealed the involvement of different metabolic pathways and transcription factor families in the salt tolerance mechanism mediated by melatonin in bananas.

Enhancing control systems of higher plant culture chambers via multilevel structural mechanistic modelling

Carles Ciurans et al.

Summary: Constraint-based metabolic models have the capability to handle the diel dynamics of plant growth, and this study integrates it into a multilevel modelling approach. Experimental data using lettuce as an example crop is used to validate the proposed approach and a model-based predictive control strategy is designed with metabolic information embedded. The proposed modelling strategy accurately predicts gas exchange dynamics and metabolic flux distribution, while the control architecture presented has the potential to manage plant chambers and merge metabolome and control algorithms.

Freshwater wetland plants respond nonlinearly to inundation over a sustained period

Junbin Zhao et al.

Summary: The two wetland species showed nonlinear and contrasting patterns of carbon uptake and use under inundation stress, which could impact their survival strategies in regularly flooded habitats. The dominance of muhly grass in many freshwater wetlands of the Everglades may be weakened in a future scenario with more intense inundation.

Relationship between relative growth rate and C:N:P stoichiometry for the marsh herbaceous plants under water-level stress conditions

Weizhen Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that with increasing flooding stress, the relative growth rate and root mass ratio of marsh herbaceous plants decreased, while above-ground biomass allocation increased. The change in nitrogen content was much greater than that of phosphorus, leading to variations in N:P ratios mainly determined by nitrogen concentration. The relationship between growth rate and nitrogen concentration was positively correlated for stem and total biomass, but negatively correlated for leaf and root organs.

Salinity and inundation effects on Iris pseudacorus: implications for tidal wetland invasion with sea level rise

Brenda J. Grewell et al.

Summary: The study found that Iris pseudacorus is vulnerable to increasing salinity during its pre-reproductive stage, with even mid-range brackish salinity inducing maximum negative effects on the plant compared to freshwater conditions. While the species shows tolerance to inundation, increasing salinity limits its ability to acclimate to greater inundation.

Floodwater Depth Causes Different Physiological Responses During Post-flooding in Willows

Irina Mozo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the post-flooding physiological responses of willows under two different depths of stagnant floodwater. The depth of floodwater not only caused different responses during flooding, but also affected the growth and physiology of willows during the post-flooding recovery period.
