Umbilical Vein Pulse Wave Spectral Analysis A Possible Method for Placental Assessment Through Evaluation of Maternal and Fetal Flow Components

Jonathan M. Rubin et al.

Summary: Placental blood flow analysis using Fast Fourier Transform of umbilical venous pulse wave spectra can assess maternal/fetal blood flow simultaneously, distinguishing between normal and complications like IUGR and pre-eclampsia. Differences in maternal/fetal spectral peaks and weight-normalized umbilical venous blood flows may act synergistically in cases with both conditions. This new marker in umbilical venous flow has the potential to identify primary causes of IUGR and pre-eclampsia when combined with umbilical cord blood flow analysis.

Ultrasound parameters of early pregnancy and Doppler indices of blood vessels in the placenta and umbilical cord throughout the pregnancy period in sheep

Angelika Brzozowska et al.

Summary: The study found that the position of arterial vessels in the placental-umbilical circulation and the gestational age significantly impact hemodynamic parameters. The research provides new insights on the blood flow in caruncular and cotyledonary arteries in sheep, contributing to a better understanding of hemodynamic changes in sheep placentas. Preliminary studies on analyzing hemodynamic parameters in umbilical and placental veins in sheep are promising for future research in this field. Moreover, the practicality of transrectal ultrasonography in early pregnancy diagnosis in sheep, as well as the use of B-mode ultrasonography for identifying corpus luteum to confirm effective mating, has been confirmed.

Comparison of Variations Between Spectral Doppler and Gaussian Surface Integration Methods for Umbilical Vein Blood Volume Flow

Jonathan M. Rubin et al.

Summary: The study compared a new method for estimating blood volume flow with the standard 1-dimensional spectral Doppler method in the umbilical vein, finding significantly less variation in estimates with the new 3-dimensional ultrasound method.

Prevalence of abnormal umbilical arterial flow on Doppler ultrasound in low-risk and unselected pregnant women: a systematic review

Joshua P. Vogel et al.

Summary: The systematic review included 42 studies with a total of 18,282 women, indicating that absent or reversed end diastolic flow is rare among low- and unselected-risk pregnant women, especially in higher-income countries. There is insufficient data from lower-income countries and further research is needed.

Immunoendocrine Dysregulation during Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: The Central Role of the Placenta

Andrea Olmos-Ortiz et al.

Summary: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a transient metabolic condition caused by dysregulation due to intolerance to carbohydrates during pregnancy, resulting in harmful effects to the mother and fetus, with the placenta playing a key role in this process.

Human placental perfusion measured using dynamic contrast enhancement MRI

Benjamin Deloison et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the feasibility of using DCE MRI to measure placental perfusion in women, finding that fetuses affected by IUGR had significantly lower total placental blood flow values compared to AGA fetuses. Additionally, DCE perfusion parameters showed a linear correlation with gestational age.

Sexual dimorphism in placental development and its contribution to health and diseases

Pengxia Yu et al.

Summary: According to the Developmental Origin of Health and Disease (DOHaD), adverse intrauterine environments can affect fetus and birth outcomes, leading to long-term disease susceptibility with sexually dimorphic neonatal outcomes and adult disease timing and severity. The placenta, as the link between mother and fetus, exhibits sexual dimorphism in both physiological development trajectory and under pathological conditions to ensure fetal survival. The placenta may mediate sexual dimorphism in neonatal outcomes and adult disease susceptibility, with sex chromosomes, sex hormones, and glucocorticoid overexposure as key factors in placental development and regulatory mechanisms.
