Efficacy of spot form of net blotch suppression in barley from seed, fertiliser and foliar applied fungicides

Mark S. McLean et al.

Summary: The study found that seed applied fluxapyroxad was the most effective in suppressing SFNB, providing the best increase in grain yield and quality among single fungicide applications. In one experiment, combining seed applied fluxapyroxad with foliar application of prothioconazole + tebuconazole significantly improved grain yield and quality.

Host and pathogen genetics reveal an inverse gene-for-gene association in the P. teres f. maculata-barley pathosystem

Ryan M. Skiba et al.

Summary: Pathogen and host genetics were used to uncover an inverse gene-for-gene interaction between the pathogen Pyrenophora teres f. maculata and barley susceptibility genes. This study reveals the complex interaction between spot form net blotch pathogen and barley, which is important for a better understanding of the interaction between plants and pathogens.

Four Reference Quality Genome Assemblies of Pyrenophora teres f. maculata: A Resource for Studying the Barley Spot Form Net Blotch Interaction

Nathan A. Wyatt et al.

Summary: Pyrenophora teres is the causal agent of net blotch, the most devastating foliar disease of barley, with two forms in nature, net form net blotch and spot form net blotch. While 11 P. teres f. teres genomes have been sequenced and stored, only one P. teres f. maculata genome is publicly available. This study presents four additional high-quality P. teres f. maculata full-genome sequences to enhance understanding of the genomic complexities of this important barley pathogen.

The barley immune receptor Mla recognizes multiple pathogens and contributes to host range dynamics

Jan Bettgenhaeuser et al.

Summary: The genes Rps6, Rps7, and Rps8 determine host species specificity in barley at different stages of the pathogen lifecycle, and the barley powdery mildew immune receptor Mla8 and Rps7 are the same gene.

Adult resistance genes to barley powdery mildew confer basal penetration resistance associated with broad-spectrum resistance

Cynthia Ge et al.

Summary: Barley powdery mildew is a major disease that breeders have traditionally controlled using dominant, pathogen race-specific resistance genes. However, continuous selection pressure and pathogen mutation have led to the need for alternative solutions. Three novel major-effect adult plant resistance genes have been identified from landraces, offering opportunities for breeding programs to develop robust mildew resistance.

Fungal effectors, the double edge sword of phytopathogens

Amrita Pradhan et al.

Summary: Phyto-pathogenic fungi can cause significant damage to crop production by deploying effectors to sabotage host machinery. While these effectors are important for pathogenesis, they can also trigger strong immune responses in resistant cultivars. Understanding effector functions is crucial for managing fungal diseases in crop plants.
